With a budget of $10,000 for a horse what would you buy?

I think I would try to get the nicest baby/young horse I could. I think I’d like it to be 3/4 TB. How about you?

Depends on your goals! Maybe we have similar goals: I bought a weanling 1/2 TB 1/2 Welsh cob from the same breeder, same stallion as a horse that was short listed to the 2016 Canadian Olympic team. He turns 2 this year and I can’t wait for him to grow up!

I would look for a TB 2-3 yr old with a pedigree by a sire I like, and follow, his career to claim or buy privately if he wasn t making his mark on track after a few races…and I would spend the whole $10k…I also would look for horses by first year sires or 1 st foals from a mare maybe at 2 yr old,in training sales…

I would keep the 6 yr old I have and plan my season
10,000 would guarantee me a pretty fun year

A $5k horse and more training. (-:

An absolutely stunning TB off the track. Then, with the other $8,800, food and go show.

I meant no disrespect to the TBs! Probably my next $10k will be to a reputable OTTB reseller. Loved my last TB, and would gladly pay to have a nice one selected for me.

This brings back memories from the early 90s when I was looking for a “been there done that” event horse. I had retired my event horse from jumping (old track injury was starting to cause issues and horse was really a closet dressage horse).

I didn’t want to start all over again at BN with another horse and was nieve enough to think that all I needed was $$$.

Budget started out at $15k and kept going up. Every time I tired out a horse I was disappointed in their foundation training, lack of experience (OTTB ridden for a season and now a Prelim horse), soundness issues, etc. It also seemed like it was a bad time for buying horses (not a lot to choose from).

I flew to several states to check out horses and was actually planning on purchasing one, but didn’t feel I needed to buy this kids next UL horse considering they were selling solid Training level horse.

Anyway, just as I was about to get on a plane and head to Texas to look at a $35k horse I came to my senses. I bought a truck instead, rode dressage on retired event horse and waited for my baby to grow up.

Best decision I ever made.

Well, when I’m actually looking $10K will get me a nice but green cross-bred or a OTTB with a bit of schooling show experience. When I’m not looking I see a lot of nice, youngish horses with quite a bit of novice or even training level experience. Sigh.
