Wofford has passed

I’m sure more people will write more things, but just letting people know officially that Jimmy has died.

I know almost no details but again I am sure more will come out.

Very sad :frowning: what a legend. Hoping he’s galloping on lovely hillsides with lush grasses and popping over the most fun jumps ever seen.

If you’ve never read Take a Good Look Around, you don’t know what you’re missing.

Many, many years ago I saw him in Southern Pines (during the HT) dining alone. I sent a drink over to him not expecting anything in return. Apparently he asked someone else in the restaurant if they knew me and a couple of weeks later I received a copy of his book in the mail.

He had written the most lovely note inside the front cover. I still have that book. What a special, special man.

There is now an article about him on the Chronicle of the Horse. I didn’t realize he’d been doing battle w pancreatic cancer.

I’m very sad to hear this! I also didn’t know he’d been battling cancer.

I’m a dressage rider and not even remotely close to an Eventer but I’m super sad to hear this. He always sounded like one heck of a horseman.

I’m not sure how much of a secret it was but many of us regular students, friends, family etc were included to have access to an online journal he kept with posts about his procedures during the whole treatment process. The comments are the best part for sure.

There weren’t a ton of posts, but I just re-read them all and found myself laughing at the things that Jim would say that were truly just him. His last book is cover to cover that way for me. I know it’s fresh but I just had asked last weekend if he would be coming up for clinics this spring. I was told he wasn’t doing well and made a mental note to reach out. I didn’t get to do that, but I’ll try to make it up to him somehow.

Em, thanks for posting this. I admired him as a horseman, a teacher, a writer and as a human. No one is perfect (I imagine he’s be the first to agree with that), but the clinics I had with him, the time I spent reading his words were valuable to me and i hope made me a better horseperson. I’ll miss his sense of humor too. Vale.

So sad to hear this - too young at 78. He was such a force in eventing, and has such a well-deserved reputation. I watched a number of his clinics and observed him training riders, and he was such a class act and amazing teacher. I’ll hang onto the books he has written!

Such sad and unexpected news. I had no idea he wasn’t well. I really enjoyed auditing his clinics.

I’m so sad to hear of this great loss. I only got to ride in one clinic with Jim, but in those 2 days, he effected a subtle but fundamental shift in how I approached riding & training. What a gifted teacher & delightful human who shared so much of himself. He shall be so very missed.

Getting to ride with him 2 consecutive years in the early 2010s was a literal Bucket List gift. It feels like a friend has passed. He will be missed. Such an incredibly knowledgeable and talented man. My heart is breaking for his loss. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

This brought tears to my eyes…I bet he already knows and I’m sure he would understand. I didn’t get to ride w him, but I audited several of his clinics and have his books. He did comment on a picture of my horse and me…he loved my horse💗.
