Wolf teeth

I am interested knowing if somebody has an idea of statistically how many horses have Wolf teeth. I read 25 per cent Somewhere but personally of all thé horses i had thé percentage was really higher.

I agree. I think most horses have wolf teeth, mares and colts. Many more than 25%. We start checking for wolf teeth in the spring of their yearling year. The earlier you find them, the easier they are to remove because they are small. Everyone here gets dental check in the spring. Even yearling babies to get them used to mouth handling while young.

Sorry, no facts or figures to prove this theory. BUT we have only had one mare raised from a foal, that did not have wolf teeth. Even aged horses we purchased still had wolf teeth, never removed, that we found on their mouth check.

Totally agree, i had only one colt of 10 that did not have, that IS why i was quite surprises when i Saw 25 per cent. I have a two and a half Years old now that did not have AT 20 months and i still cannot sée. Maybe under thé gums but who knows. Would it bé better to do an xray? Or thé blind ones people just leave thém in?

We have an excellent horse Dentist who does our horses. He found TINY wolf teeth, not really visible, by feel. Popped them right out with his tool. No fuss, no drugs, 2 drops of blood.

We prefer to remove any wolf teeth, so horse has “no excuse” to act up in training or use later in life. We have not X-Rayed any, depending on the Dentist to tell us what is in there and remove it. Without good roots, wolf teeth can shift around, jar the next tooth if bumped by a bit. Has to make a horse throw his head!

We try to always keep our using horses happy, healthy, tack fitting properly. Remove ALL his excuses for poor acting, so you can train with a clear conscience, correct the wrong responses.

When my filly had her yearly dental as a 2 year old, she had them so I made an appt to have her 3 year old dental done at the vet clinic before I introduced a bit to her. so they could get taken out. They had come out on their own- seriously if all my babies could do that, I’d be very happy lol
