I emailed for a catalog; that is often hit or miss with overseas companies, but I can always get a friend in the UK to order it otherwise and send it to me. I did tell them about this thread. Maybe they’ll realize that we do need 'em here!
But raise your hand if you thought the photo of the plus sized backsides in all the breech colors was just hysterical. Oh. My. Word.
Woes of a Womanly Sized Rider
I have a pair of Kerrits that I bought locally and love. I love them so much I decided to order another pair from Dover (not in stock at local tack shop).
It took over a week for them to come, and now they’re here, they don’t fit.
I had a bad feeling as soon as I ordered them that something would be wrong with them but told myself to be “logical.” I am not always logical. My intuition is too often spot on.
They don’t fit because they’re too tight, and they’re too tight because the material is different and the seams are different. The seams are not like the ones on the catalog photo, which IS like the tights I love.
I can’t help feeling that if I were smaller, it wouldn’t be such a hassle. The tights wouldn’t be tight. There would be more tights available locally because I’d be built like the local stick-figure riders (actually I’ve come to see that NONE of the local riders I see have “perfect” figures for riding pants). But if I were a stick-figure (not a derogatory term among my stick-figure friends), I could find riding pants more easily.
So I have to send these back. And I am still without the tights I wanted all year and couldn’t afford, because now although I have enough money, I apparently have too much figure.
I really researched these–style numbers, Kerrits website, etc., and according to all I saw online and in Dover’s catalog, I was ordering exactly what I had. What I got is the same number and name as I ordered, but not the same style.
What are we to do when our local tack shops don’t carry womanly sizes?
I am glad Dover will take them back, postage paid by them–that is good. But I wish Dover were more knowledgeable about the style changes of their products.
Grrrrrrrrrrrr
FYI vests
For those looking for vests, I found a really nice-fitting quilted black vest at Eddie Bauer that should do very well as a riding vest. It comes in XL and XXL (this was what they had in the store; the website says also 1X to 4X) and has adjustable tabs at the back to cinch in the waist. It has a lightweight down filling, curved hem, two zippered pockets and should be perfect for fall. The salesperson said it machine washed just fine and wore well.
They had a few other versions with various side slit designs and decorative stitching. Lots of different colours.
Thats exactly what happened to my boots criss!
The zipper seperated about 4 inches from the bottom on an area that isnt stressed!
I never ever ever got a response from Hispar and when I tried to leave a negative feed back, I got reemed by ebay and they quit taking feedback for them
So I just used some waxed thread and sewed the zipper about 2 inches past where it would seperate (both boots) Just went around and around the zipper then super glued it.
Like I mentioned before, they arent the best boots but for the sizing offered, they are the best out there, which is sad
Oh man. Now I’m going to buy them, even though last year I got a bunch of lovely vests from Avenue (in brown, navy, black, red and brown).
I am using the excuse that the adjustable tabs make these better, and that’s the version I’m sticking with.
Anybody tried the Irideon dry silk shirts? Dover has 'em in sizes 1x, 2x, 3x. They are expensive…

Yes, I have one–it’s nice and cool! But I wonder why I paid the money for it when I get horse slobber all over the front and the back. I think you can get them cheaper these days at places like LL Bean’s and even Walmart…
nods decent enough, but absurdly expensive for what it is. You can get the same wicking material elsewhere just as nice for a lot less.
Here’s an email I got from Fuller Fillies today, after I sent in the catalog request. And a heads up as well - remember, UK sizing is not the same as US. You can Google it, but IIRC a UK 16 is a US 12-14, depending on the manufacturer.
We have a Stockist that works entirely online called Tackanory (www.tackanory.co.uk) and it is one of their ladies that joined the forum when prompted from another manufacturer who makes coloured Bridles (confused yet?) It seems she has joined in my name too which could be even more confusing.
I only wish I understood the rules on Forums because I’m sure I could increase business if I did.
Fuller Fillies plans to come to the USA within 12 months, we just have to get the Trademark protected there first. Tackanory sends about 12 parcels every week out to USA so we know there is business there and I have several Distribuotrs interested already.
FF is receiving plaudits from across the UK which has seen nothing like it; there is no big secret, I am 5’5’’, size 20 and love to ride and was fed up wearing men’s clothing! Luckily I also had a design and Textiles degree and so decided that dressing ‘real women’ to enjoy their horses in style was my life-mission.
We try to pitch prices so that customers can buy a whole wardrobe and colour coordinate to facilitate this with threads of colours passing from season - season; with regard to sizing, all samples come in a size 20 so that, if they don’t fit me, they don’t get accepted. We aim the range at 5’3’’ - 5’7’’ as this is where most larger ladies sit - as we expand across Europe and beyond and can justify it, we will also have a ‘Taller’ range but at the moment the numbers don’t add up.
As the cost of sending a brochure to you is extortianate, can I ask that you have a look at the website brochure or log on to Tackanory and enter the name Fuller Fillies in the search bar to view all the range and details about sizing etc.
If you then e-mail your order and address to them they will quote on P&P and send a Paypal request
Great to hear from you and hope to get some feedback after your purchase!
Best wishes,

Just popped into Tackanory/FF - Instantly I saw models wearing the items. AND THEY’RE REAL WOMEN!!!
I HATE HATE HATE ads that are for “larger/plus sizes” being modeled by less than plus-size ladies. It gives me absolutely no idea if that article of clothing is actually going to fit when I get it.
Thanks!
Thanks for the Target heads up. I don’t usually shop there as a rule (voting with the pocketbook) but I guess I’m not enough an idealist to pass up something suitable for lessons/clinics/teaching. :uhoh:
If you’re interested in their Ultimate Polos–get there soon. There were only 3 left in XXL. I would not call it a generous XXL myself, I’m fitting into some XLs these days, and these fit ok, a little tight acrross the top of the back/armpit area, but ample in the chest and shoulders fit just about right. I’m a 16-18 on top these days, 38DD for comparison. (yeah, never would’ve thought I’d post that publicly on such a hugely viewed forum–but sizes are so relevant, it’s important to share. :o ) They are a little too long for me to untuck, hitting midway between hipbones and actual hips, which is an awkward place for me. A taller person who actually HAS a waist shouldn’t have an issue with it looking fine untucked. OTOH, long enough that no worries about exposing things not needing exposure in this lifetime.
The material is great–wicking, rather like the under-armour stuff. I snagged all three XXLs at this Tarjay, 2 black, one white.
More vests–check out Cabellas. They have the Outback Grand Prix vest in oilskin which is quite dressy, AND weather resistant, a lovely warm wooly flannel lining. I have a 2xl and it’s just right. Also have a quilted vest with a peter pan collar that I got one of this winter, very cute, a boxy, flattering cut (hip length) and in darker winter colours this catalogue. A very nice selection of fleecey type or winter vests, in XL-2XL. The 2XL will fit up to a Women’s 22 or so, though they seem roomier on top than in the hips.
cheers.
Cool Max T shirts
It’s been a couple of weeks since I got any e-mails about updates to this thread, so I thought I’d post something here myself.
Do any of you know where to get good Coolmax-type T-shirts? I’m thinking Wal-Mart more than Dover, because of my budget. I’ve actually seen some at Wal-Mart but I haven’t tried any of them. I’d also consider a sleeveless shirt if it were cut for womanly sized women and had plenty of coverage. I just don’t feel comfortable riding in spaghetti straps, although at home, in my tank top, I feel oh-so-cool and comfortable! :)
I know this answer is wayyyyyy after your post, but I just saw cool max t shirts (long sleeve, short sleeve, sleeveless) in LLBean. I have a couple and they wash out in the sink great, and are dry in the morning, so they are good for travel too! Prices are in the twenty something range, well worth it.
But do they have them in “plush sizes”???
True, but I"m wondering if the IRideon would fit me better? Most of the women’s exercise stuff in the stores doesn’t come in sizes that fit me, and the men’s stuff fits me awkwardly (way too long in the arms and body by the time I get the size that fits my chest). So I’m wondering if the Irideon shirts are cut for me. The Kerrits ones are really nice and cool and lightweight. I’m about to order more of them.
Kerrits Komplaint – and a heads up!
I am soooo disappointed in the Kerrits I ordered!
I bought a pair of the Flow Rise tights locally and they fit very well. The shop had only one pair in my size – XL, and those fit me better than the other style I tried on in a 2X.
So I ordered a pair of the Flow Rise from Dover.
They finally arrived. And they didn’t fit.
The style has changed. Same name, same style number, but the styling has changed. Instead of the nice curvy “horseshoe” front seams, they now have 3 vertical seams. The Kerrits rep told me that this seam styling is “more flattering.”
Sorry? “Flattering” over “fit”? These are schooling tights, not show breeches. I do not feel flattered when I order a pair of tights and the style has changed so that the style no longer fits. The curvy seam made the tights roomier (although not as roomy as the curvy-seamed Body Chemistre tights, which are my favorites, but also out of stock).
So I’m having to send my new Kerrits back (bless Dover’s great return policy; wish they’d pictured the new styling in their catalogues and updated the style color-name).
So if any of you have the Flow Rise with the curvy horseshoe seams and are thinking of ordering more just like them–they’re no longer being made, because they’re not “flattering.”
Looks like it’s gonna be harder and harder for womanly sized women to buy riding pants. State Line is no longer local so we can’t try on clothes there, and mail-order styles change with no advance notice.
BTW, the Kerrits tights that come in a 2X that was smaller than the Flow Rise XL are the Performance Riding Tights. Of course, now that the Flow Rise seam has changed, they probably run as small in XL as the others do in 2X. But hey–they’re more FLATTERING! Right. Just what I want in schooling tights.
Y’know … maybe if we all wrote to Kerrits … think they might listen to a whole group of horsewomen?
I need to quit looking at this thread, it’s costing me too much money! I LOVE the Eddie Bauer vest in aubergine. It would go so well with my purple Barney britches!
There are men’s TuffRider polo jeans for sale right now on a well-known auction site. I’m wondering what these would be like to ride in, as the men’s sizes might fit me. Anybody seen these jeans in person?
I just love the black PolarTec-type vest I got at Academy. It cost under $30 and is very lightweight and very warm, and goes great with my black tights, black sweatshirt, black helmet, black boots … also with my blue ones and other colors.
But if I can’t find the blue tights I want, I’ve been looking at Devonaire’s purple ones!
