Womanly-sized riders, unite!

I am looking for a winter riding boot (tall) which boot has the biggest calf? Tried the Ariat Artic Tall Winter Riding Boot - no way.

The Mountainhorse Rimfrost boots fit generously in the calf, however they’re very bulky for riding in. The most I’ll wear them for is hacking. They’re great for doing chores, though!

Kerrits are terrible with their sizing. I wear a size twelve jean, pants, and I have to order their XL. Wow, I thought, I can’t see where this is advantageous to the company. I mean really! You do not want to make pants for someone who is a 14 or larger? Don’t they know the average woman in the USA is size 14!!!

I’m always surprised at riding clothing, it is cut so small, and I see so many people who are not that small. Where are these small people hiding? I know loads of kids ride, so I am assuming clothing is easy to buy for the under 18 crowd. But to stop at size 12? Seriously, someone has a warped sense of humor at Kerrits.

okay, I have another UPDATE!

I recently (FINALLY) received my RJ Passage coat - it took 12 weeks to get - apparently they’re made to order in Romania or something.

The good news, is that they DO fit true to dress size - a 24 would fit a 24, for example. The arms are a bit long, and the bust is way too roomy… but I have a good tailor who can fix those minor details. The GOOD news is that this coat is a full 4" LONGER than my old Ovation coat. (I believe it’s 32" from collar to hem) This is a huge blessing for those of us with “back”.

Anyway… I’m happy with the coat, and do recommend it as a economical alternative to custom.

Yes, which has led me to believe they don’t care if they lose money!!! I have had frequently thought it was “just me” until this thread was started. I was thinking I was some sort of freak that I can’t find riding clothes. the looks from the retail associates in the tack shops was too much for me, then I decided to shop catalogs. thinking the sizing would have a wider range. nope. Then finding brands that work only to have them changed by the manufacturer or discontinued completely, was just awful!
this thread has been a wealth of information, and has helped many of us find awesome riding clothes that make us look like we belong!
thanks Twinkletoes for starting the thread, thank you all for keeping it going~ (I look here first!)

I love this post!

I’m not sure if they have been mentioned, but EQ Rider has plus size tights and they are comfortable. I have a pair of those and also some of the TuffRider breeches. I like them both and would recommend them. EQ Rider are fun because they offer lots of colors

To me riding in comfortable tights or breeches is the way to go. I can’t imagine riding in jeans anymore… even on the trail.

I don’t think clothing is easy to buy for the under-18s either. I occasionally look at the kids’ tights and breeches for a young relative and they all look tiny (this particular child is tiny, but not all kids are! I was not a tiny kid and had a terrible time finding jods, let alone breeches).

I gave up on Kerrits (the company) when their rep told me they’d changed the seams on their F-low Rise tights because the new vertical seams are “more flattering” than the curvy seams. My response to that reasoning is that I do not feel flattered when I order a pair of tights in the “correct” size and have to send them back because they’re too small. I then ordered a pair in another brand because I have a pair of that brand–this second pair arrived and–guess what!?–they are smaller than the pair I’ve had for about 2 years. The fabric is different–not as stretchy–and while I can wear them, they don’t fit as comfortably as my old pair.

I want to go to the fabric store, find some appropriate material, and try making my own tights using an old worn-out pair as a pattern. I have a sewing machine, I know how to sew; I just hope I can make a pair of tights. I wish I could turn it into a business. I would only make pants for womanly-sized women–anything below a 14 or 12 would be “too small”! :stuck_out_tongue:

I know what you mean about some children having a rough time too, Wellspotted.

TuffRider makes an “Extra” Jod for kids and it’s been a good seller for me. I didn’t ride when I was a child, but I know just buying clothing was embarrassing at times :frowning:

TuffRider also had a great tight that wasn’t advertised as “Plus Size” but happened to run large. I have 2 pairs and love them. The 34" waist fits a 20-22 pant size woman. When I found out they were discontinuing them I bought up a bunch of the 32’s and 34’s for my store.

If you ever do go into the business of making these, please let me know!

This laugh is on me–

I just looked at the Hickory Horse Hut’s online catalogue and saw the ladies’ plus-size breeches and tights. The first item I saw said Riding Tights With Gripper Bottom. OK–I know what a gripper bottom is, I see it in catalogues all the time, described one way or another. But this time when I saw it, I thought, “Gripper Bottom–some sort of super-grippy full seat?”

OK–it’s been a long day, I was at the barn a little after 7:00 a.m. and now nearly 12 hours later I’ve just come home from a birthday party with horse-crazy kids (fun!). So my mind’s not as alert as it could be right now.

But I think next time I hear a discussion of full seat breeches I will call them gripper-bottom breeches. I know, everyone I know will laugh me out of the barn. I couldn’t wear them anyway–I ride in a suede-seat or equi-suede-seat saddle!

Seriously–there are some really good-looking breeches and tights in that online catalogue and I’m thinking of ordering some next time I need breeches or tights.

check breeches to Size 36 Long at thecollectiononlinestore.com - also email her for other available styles, I did after getting the best buy in a coat, I have ever gotten - and I got a 24 Reg

I’m confused about the complaint about Kerrits…that or I want to buy size 12s where Petitefilly shops–My large rear end usually requires a MINIMUM of size 16s, and my XL Kerrits flowrise boot cut tights from TOTD fit me kinda, well, kinda sloppy…

Speaking of Kerrits…

Can anyone confirm or deny the rumor that I’ve heard (from my local tack shop, actually) that the Kerrits Ventilator show shirt will be DISCONTINUED in the X sizes.

:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

Can’t seem to find out if that’s true or not…and am having a difficult time finding them anywhere.

That’s awesome! I’m going to need a new coat for next season and I was dreading the search… My problem isn’t the top, it’s the bottom! lol I have a LARGE derrier and hips that make vented coats not look so good, lol.

help oh savvy shopping ladies…

Where’s the cheapest place to get regular Irideon (Cadence?) Stretch Cords in knee patch in 2 or 3x in WILLOW?

I may yet get my carcass out to a show, but I’ve no breeks. I prefer non-white as it gets too many shades of white going on the pinto and one or the other ends up looking dingy.

Mind you, I’m now on a deadline since I put off deciding on the show. :sigh:

The bits and barter board has some plus size breeks and a larger saddle.

Thanks for the tip about RJ Classics, whoever it was that posted it! I just got my $50 clearance coat yesterday ( I only ordered it Saturday, so wow, fast shipping) and it’s very nice, and big enough so I don’t have to worry I’ll pop out of it if my horse puts in one of his overly enthusiastic fences! They really do run true to size, which is awesome.

Well, I’ve searched the thread (that’s a search function, who knew?) and I still can’t find the answer…

How does the sizing on the Irideon Cadence Cords actually work?

Anyone a VERY shapely size 18 in Lee Riders or chinos? Or a 36 in Cotton Naturals Shapelys? What size Cadence Cords work for you?

Am ordering, but it’s for a show, and the timing is going to be TIGHT. I would rather the breeches NOT be.

Hmm, well, I may not be the best one to answer, since breeches fit me weird (I seem to have to order a really big size compared to my size in regular clothes), but here goes.

I wear about a size 18, more or less. I say more or less, because manufacturers’ sizes seem to vary widely. In the land of 1x/2x/3x sizes, I’m a 1x on the bottom. As I type this, I am wearing a pair of the Irideon cords in a 3x. Most people would probably consider them way too big, but I kind of like the extra room. Except in the a**. The 3X fullseat definitely makes for droopy drawers in the fullseat part.

I can get myself into the 1X, but I consider them tight on me. So I’ve just ordered the 2X, and I hope that will be the happy medium for me.

I’m pretty sure the Cotton Naturals in size 36 would be way too small on me, so I bet you can wear the size 1X in the Irideons. That said, my body is not of the cut that would wear the Shapely style breeches. My waist is not that much smaller than my hips. So I don’t know if that would effect what size you’d wear.

Just a heads up that Avenue has their fall vests in, www.avenue.com They are $39 right now, but they go on sale pretty fast. I would take one size larger than you normally buy.

favorite schooling tights and breeches?

What are your favorite womanly sized schooling tights and breeches (preferably pull-on breeches or jods)?

My favorites are my Body Chemistre tights, then my Kerrits (before they changed the styling), then my Miller’s Polartecs, then my Devonaires (all schooling tights).

Since Body Chemistre’s sold out of the XL (at least for this season) and the others have had styling changes that means they don’t fit as well as my older ones, I’m getting anxious about what to buy next when I need new ones.

Please post which ones you like, and why!
