I know women of childbearing age need to exercise extreme caution when handling Regumate…I moved my horses home a couple of weeks ago and one of my mare’s is on Regumate. I am careful and make certain to put on fresh gloves before touching the bottle and syringe each morning. One feed scoop and one bucket are used solely for her feed so there is no chance of cross contamination - however, I had a funky three week cycle this month which is totally out of the norm, and am wondering if that could possible have something to do with being in contact with the Regumate?! Has anyone else experienced anything like this? I’m sure it could just be a weird month, but the timing is definitely odd. At my old barn, we made certain only the male staff ever handled it, so I’ve never dosed it out myself before.

male staff can also be impacted by working with the hormone.
because of its oily nature it can spread everywhere. it can spread from the feed bucket into the water bucket, for instance. however the biggest risk is at the concentrated source. make sure your gloves are nitrile , they provide better chemical protection, latex is ok but nitrile is superior. rubber dish gloves are not adequate. turn gloves inside out as you remove them. there are vids on you tube which show the proper method to remove contaminated gloves. personally i think the syringe should be disposed as well
I used it on my mare when she was pregnant and do not recall any really odd periods but I’ve never been entirely regular anyway so there’s that. There are many reasons for an irregular period, including illness and stress. Moving your horse to a new facility could have triggered enough stress, especially since most of us have underlying stress due to the pandemic and ecomonic uncertainty. If you are worried, ask your doctor about it.
Anything that your mare slobbers on after eating can also contaminate you. Like…I have a couple that like to lick the stall bars and the bucket handles when they eat. Touch that bucket handle with bare hands and you get a dose of hormones.

Ugh, she’s a cribber and especially when she eats. So yes, she takes a bite and cribs on her stall door, her bucket, you get the idea 
And yes, she wears a cribbing collar. Still tries though.
She was on Depo before it was banned, so I’m not sure what other options are out there, the Regumate has been a great replacement but it’s some nasty stuff to have to handle.

Ontario MOA recommends two layers of gloves, rubber or vinyl.

Butyl rubber, Viton, and nitrile rubber are typically best for use with alcohols (SDS shows 10% benzyl alcohol), in that order, which should also be sufficient for the oil (70% neobee oil).
Dosing gun- very easy and much safer. I like to keep the bottle in its own small bucket with the gun placed spout down, preventing myself from having to handle any drips/leakage. Expect to replace the gun once every 12-18mos. Use gloves when moving the gun from an old bottle to a new one. If your mare slobbers/cribs/etc while eating, use a canvas feed bag. I like to dose directly into the feed bag or stall bucket, to limit what the Regumate touches.
I believe you can get an injectable progesterone- not depo. Worth looking into. If you are on birth control, Regumate can interfere- be aware!
Yes to the dosing gun! I had a freak accident with regumate. The syringe exploded. I didn’t have a cycle for 6+ months and major migraines. Usually where I worked they tried to have the male staff deal with the regumate.
Yep! Had to dose my pregnant mare for two weeks. I did the syringe way and got it down my wrist past the gloves for the first dose. One more time I splashed it on my hand trying to draw it up. I started feeding it with her daily RB and vitamins to make it easier. I started my period early and it was quite heavy compared to normal.

But will that help with the transfer from your mare touching things while she eats?
Now, will good old soap and water take care of any residue left on her stall bars, door, bucket, etc? Once I have everything clean, I can use the dosing gun and feed bag and hopefully eliminate the issue.
I would recommend looking into the injectable regumate version available from BET pharm, if your mare tends to drop feed, slobber, etc. The injectable is much safer from a human contamination standpoint than the dosing gun or syringe.
