This is a terrific article about four women jockeys, including Sophie Doyle and Chantal Sutherland, who are having a great meet this winter at the Fairgrounds.
That was good to see. Thanks for posting!
Tacitus’s exercise rider was the first women to be permitted to ride around the Saudi track this past week. It was alerted on my social media page. pretty cool.
Thanks, enjoyed the article very much and wish them all well this year.
I thought it was a weird article. I appreciated what was in the article but puzzled by the glaring omission about Bella. the title reads, “‘We Pick Each Other Up’: Fair Grounds’ Bella Riders Hope To Set A Good Example” but then never explains anything about Bella. It is a name these four created for their group? Is it a designator now used in racing which I have never heard of? Is it a support group of all horse women, grooms, trainers, jockeys, etc. or is it just for female jockeys? Is it used at other race tracks?
At the end of the article they say something about hoping others “…will follow our example and create a bella hash-tag unique to their racetrack,” but there is never an example of the bella hashtag they created. Is it #bellafairgrounds or #Bella Louisiana Downs or what?
It’s shown at the very end of the article: #fgbellariders
I just figured it was a social media marketing gimmick to drum up more interest. I’m all in favor of anything that gives women jockeys a greater chance of succeeding.
I looked and even did a search for the word “bella” and missed it. Thanks.
