Women racehorse trainers? - updated post #19

Hi all,
When I am not teaching high school art, I am a photographer… and I have this idea for a (mostly) pictoral book on women racehorse trainers. I have already contacted Laurierace and JessiP and they are cool with me coming up to shadow them and photograph next summer…

My questions are:

  1. Does anyone else know of female racehorse trainers I could contact? (I live near Sam Houston Racepark if anyone knows of female trainers there in particular, close to home!)

  2. Do you think there would be interest in such a book?

Thoughts?
Thanks!

Janet Del Castillo in Winter Haven, FL.

Some say she’s wacky, but I’m sure she’s got a lot of good stories.

Her website: www.backyardracehorse.com

I breed TB’s in Florida and I have started trading racing age for broodmares with Shawn Murphy in Ohio. She is at Turfway Park right now. My 2 yr old filly, True High, is in her first race on Friday night at 10 PM. Jingles Please!

OT: i am galloping at Sam Houston Race Park! cheers, alex

Shelly Riley

I don’t know where any of them are based, but you can google the names and probably find out.

Great thanks!

What about interest? Would anyone be interested in such a book?

Alex, I have sent you a PM

Do you mind going international and including Canada? My late friend was one of (if not THE first) female trainer in Ontario, possibly Canada. Also the first female steward in Canada if my info is correct. PM me if you are interested.

I think- depending on the art work  - there is a market for this book.

I certainly would be interested. And I do think a lot of other folks would be interested. If you could have the book released around Triple Crown time, I bet you would get a very large response!

If you are coming up to MD to visit Laurie, then a friend of mine trains out of Laurel. She’s an amazing lady and even rode steeplechases in her younger days. She has her own farm as well where she breeds several mares each year. She’s a fantastic lady and still exercises her own horses!!

Her name is Gretchen Mobberley. I’m sure she’d have some GREAT stories for you!

Edited to add: She may even have some old photos for you.

I certainly would buy a book about it, especially with some amazing photography!

I think it could be a really neat book. And also a good article (or series of articles) for a magazine or newspaper.

If you want to travel to Finger Lakes in NY, we have several. One is even a second generation, took over the stable from her Father. PM me if you want contact information from any of them.

Thanks folks!

Since I am a teacher, most of the actual photography couldn’t take place until this summer (2008)… I am just trying to get a feel for who they are, where they are, if there would be some interest etc.

DeeThbd - I would include Canada, absolutely.

And as much as I like the idea of having writing in the book… I am not a writer… so would either need help (lots!) or have someone else do the writing…

Well if you come to MD in the summer, the trainer I mentioned, I’m sure would be glad to have you take pictures. All her babies should be on the ground and all the mares back from re-breeds. Not to mention breaking 2 y/os!!

In steeplechase-land you have Betty Bosley Bird, Patty Boyce Meserve, Janet Elliot, Kathy Neilson McKenna, Sanna Neilson Hendriks. Some pioneers, some current.

What a great idea!

There are a few in Michigan, but one worth mentioning is Maryanne Barron. She has been successful by rehabbing the horses other trainers used up. She does it not with a myriad of drugs, but with turn out when necessary and a complete conditioning program. On top of that she is quite the character.

Good luck!

Helen Pitts, who started Curlin.

more questions!

Y’all are awesome thanks!!

Those trainers near-ish me (one at SHRP and one at Remington), I can start photographing now… those that I have to travel to won’t be until 2008 summer. So, I may be PMing some of you later!

Any other ideas/suggestions/thoughts/musings on such a book? What might YOU want to see in a book like this? I have a vague idea of making it kind of like a “Day in the Life” kind of thing… but any other ideas are greatly appreciated!
