Won't lift his head, swollen throat, swollen lips, no temp...

Thankfully we can rule out EEE, EIA and WN, negative on those three. Plus we assumed because he is improving. So now we are down to the big three, EPM, Melanoma or a toxin. Blood work is normal other than the low platelet count. The sudsided swelling, muscle twitching seem to lead us to anticoagulant toxin. I remembered this (at work) morning he had a few drops of blood on his coronet band, I thought it was a scrape from an episode? Who knows.

But, he is back hanging with his buddies today, staying with herd. He is using his head and neck normally and has never stopped eating, still no fever. He did have an episode last night, but it was shorter than the previous ones. He is also came toward me in his pen for food this am. Not all the way, but much closer to normal. So, we have progress, the EPM blood test came back positive. But most do so, it is still a possibility. Just hoping improvement continues…

OP, just catching up. I’m so glad he is improving. Seeing progress is heartening in the midst of a mystery. Sending another load of jingles, we don’t want you to run out!

More good wishes from Maine!

I’m very glad your horse is getting better.

While it would be great to have an answer, recovery is an excellent outcome! Hope he continues to improve.

Yay!!! Glad to hear he is improving. I’ve been following this closely and rooting for your boy daily. Btw, what’s his name?

I’m also glad that you seem to have positive progress, even if you don’t have a diagnosis. We’re rooting for you and your boy!

How thoroughly did you all examine the jaws and throatlatch area for marks from a poisonous snakebite?

Here’s an article that mentions some symptoms similar to your guy- swollen throatlatch, possible tongue involvement, degradation of red blood cells.

Do you have many poisonous snakes around your place? When did you see the blood droplets on the coronet?

His name is Dante or Grey. Thanks for all the Jingles! As for snakes we have Copperheads and Rattlesnakes here.

Yet more improvement this evening, way more. Let me pet him, got chased by my pony gelding with no episode, started drinking out the water trough and best of all walked up the hill, long strided, back swinging, looking side to side, with happy ears, then trotted downhill with no issues. let’s hope this is a not medicated feeling well, but a real feeling well.

Sounds like important improvement, maybe you got it whipped this time.

Would be nice to know what happened, but if he is ok, that is good.

Great update, but we’ll all keep jingling, until you are sure he is well.

Thanks everyone! Spoke with vet tonight and we are optimistic but cautious. He could go back downhill with Dex out of his system. Last dose was tonight, going to keep him on the antibiotics for another week.

I went out to check on him and he came to the gate and asked to go into the dry lot for the night. Then he stood and waited for his goodnight rub and for me to tickle his nose. Just like he did every night before he got sick. It is so good to see my giant pocket pony come back to himself. Still worried but so happy he is more like himself!

Oh, that’s a hopeful sign!

Hang in there. Horse health mysteries happen, some are more frightening than others.Yours is quite scary.

Continued best hopes from Colorado, and do remember to take care of yourself as well as your beasties.

If you lived nearby I would make you a nice dinner and deliver it to you.

You guys are awesome! Did someone say dinner? So appreciate the offer! The only thing I can cook that is worth eating is a bran mash, lol. The same this morning, happy pony. So far, so good!

So glad to hear he’s holding his own.

I make a good quiche and am good at bearnaise sauce to put on steak or asparagus or eggs or whatever, but it would lose is magic on the way from Colorado to SC. :frowning:

Hang in there.

Tonight’s update, guess who ran from the front pasture to the gate:) Acting normal and picked up his feed pan, dumped it out and threw it at me. I guess that is his way if saying he is done with SMZ’s and the brown sugar is fooling no one. Tomorrow is the test, no more dex…so if he holds we are good. If not, time for more tests…
