25 hours no dex…no change he is acting totally normal. I think the storm has passed, no true idea of what caused this and probably never will. Looks like a toxin or a snake bite. It was beyond strange but I am thankful my big boy is back to well and happy. Thanks everyone for your support, it really meant a lot! Thanks for the good update, he looks contented there, pretty face and such a long forelock.
What a handsome devil! So glad he continued to feel well today.
Thanks! His forelock is like a full time fly mask!
Sadly no Andalusian in his bloodlines, lol
So glad he is doing well. Very handsome!
Thanks! Still doing well today, I was a little worried about leaving him today but still doing well!
OP, I’m glad he’s doing much better now. I’m no vet, but I’ve been around horses and a cat who were bitten by venomous snakes. What you describe sounds very much like what I’ve seen with them.
I’m glad to hear he was looking for the rub and the little tickle. That’s a pretty good sign that he has turned the corner, I hope on the way to a complete recovery.
If he is inclined to change his overall look I’ll take part of that generous forelock so it’s not in his eyes all the time. My Paint gelding has a very tiny collection of wispy hairs between his ears. It probably shouldn’t be called a forelock because it doesn’t perform any function, let alone anything to do with flies.
me too, agree. my yearling and my cat. Water moccasin and rattler. I’d put good money on snake bite.
That seems to be the leading consensus…No definitive marks… I am just really happy that he is getting back to normal!
I also think it was a snake bite. Glad he is healing.
After reading lots of info about snakebites and the resulting symptoms, I know it does seem to depend on the amount of toxin injected, etc. I’d probably rule out copperhead since they typically don’t cause serious symptoms in a horse… And since my yearling got a well injected water mocassin dose in the nose and had few symptoms, I’d guess it was a rattlesnake bite.
Are coral snakes in your area? That’s the only other poisonous snake I worry about cause we have them here on my farm. But I’ve had a collie dog and a young horse scoot them across the pasture with their noses and the snake never attacked, just tried to get away. So in my experience they’re not aggressive like a rattlesnake.
Good news!
Sending you your choice of virtual dessert; Bananas with rum caramel sauce and fresh whipped cream, blueberry muffins, or sour cream cookies with brown butter frosting. (The only sweet things I can make from scratch that always turn out well .)
Your horse looks lovely. I’m so glad things are looking up.
I am almost glad you live in CO. I try to keep my carbs low and you would be too tempting!
Bananas and blueberries are both fruits with healthy nutrients. I have my mother’s not-to-be-believed carrot cake recipe. It has tons of finely shredded carrots, which are a vegetable and also good for you. The carbs are simply the mode of delivery and add additional pleasant-tasting accents. My horse will not eat bananas or carrot cake so I do not need to share them. I’ve never offered him muffins with Maine wild blueberries because they require quite a bit of butter. Maybe that deserves some research. :D:lol:
I could whip up a batch of my cranberry orange muffins, they are delicious! For Christmas this year going for dried cranberries soaked overnight in a orange liqueur, I think they will be awesome.
All y’ all need to stop! Carrot Cake is my complete weakness, it’s the cream cheese frosting! MMMmmmm
Soaking dried cranberries in orange liqueur - YUM!!! I would not have thought of that.I will have to try that.
It might not work, but I’m giving it a go!
