Wooden tack trunk

I am looking to buy a quality wood tack trunk (not vinyl), medium size. Will keep light sheet, saddle pads, accessories in trunk. I have a locker for my saddle, bridle, boots at home. Trunk will travel to shows as needed.

Which trunk makers do you recommend? I had a McGuinn trunk 20 years ago when I lived in Fl but now in CO and passed old trunk on years ago. I have looked at the Phoenix West trunks online. Are the prestige trunks with all the brass more common or the more simple wood?

I’m a re-rider after almost 20 years so not up on the latest fashions and appreciate your guidance  My trainer recommends wood trunk with cover but no real brand preference.

My trainer just bought this trunk: https://www.smartpakequine.com/pt/phoenix-west-starter-tack-trunk-9758

It is lovely for the price, and then you wouldn’t have to worry about wait time (it arrived a week after ordering).

That is the trunk I have and 2 other people that show with us have. Great trunk - manageable size, well made and looks great with a cover (we all have covers that match.)

Look into Sawhorse Tack Trunks. Nicely made and reasonably priced. They do take some time to ship unless they have what you want in stock, but it’s worth the wait.

If you know of a decent carpenter, have one made. Basically, they are just a box, and most carpenters can make a box. Brass fittings are available online for not much money.

I am drooling over The Bay Pony’s tack trunks. Their Deluxe Large size is only $550…I am trying not to splurge but I don’t think I will win this fight…

I don’t think you can beat the quality of a McGuinn trunk, personally, but of course they do come at a cost. My current McGuinn stuff is over 20 years old and still looks beautiful (both wood and vinyl.)

There are certainly lots of other wood trunks out there at different price points. If you anticipate the trunk being shipped a lot (ie, heaved into trailers, piled up with other trunks, dragged around…) my suggestion is to get the best quality you can and also invest in a good padded cover.

I’ve had tack trunks from several makers- my favorites were McGuinns and Impact Cases (those aren’t pretty but completely bulletproof and great for meds, assorted stuff and things, etc) - My Phoenix West trunk has needed all the hardware replaced several times and is currently a very pretty side table in my living room with, you guess it, broken hinges.

^ By impact case I actually meant wilson case. Got them mixed up!

Thank you so much for all of your suggestions. I will look into all of these. Seems like several good options.

Dandy Products. Beautiful and sturdy. Make sure you get a cover!

One more question…when buying a nice wooden trunk, should I buy the one with all the fancy brass detailing or no? I have been off th show circuit for 20 years so not sure what’s in fashion. I hate to admit it, but I kind of care

McGuinn is still the premium trunk, all others are just copies. Yes on fancy brass detailing, nothing has changed there. My second choice would be Phoenix West but honestly the quality doesn’t even compare.

I bought my second Horse Fare trunk this year. My first one is about 10 years old and looks great. They have several options: http://horsefare.com/main.php?category=23

"I have a locker for my saddle, bridle, boots at home. "

Eponymous not to derail your topic but I’m looking for a locker to keep at home for all the above stuff - do you like the one you have? if so, what brand is it?

Javacleo - the barn where I board my horse has built-in lockers with saddle racks in the tack room for all boarders.

I have two from Bird Song tack trunks and have been happy with them for going on 5 years.
