I was wondering today if Ariat is pronounced “Air-ee-ought” or “Air-ee-at”
What other words can you just not pronounce right? And which ones drive you crazy when someone gets them wrong?

I have heard it pronounced both ways !
The one that gets me upset is dressage - I have had friends and unsuspecting, yet well intentioned, family members say it “dress -i - g”
I say “Aa-ree-it” (rhymes with LARIAT) but that’s because I’ve lived in the Midwest WAY too long! 
When I was very young and read a lot of horse books but had nobody to actually TALK TO about horses I was convinced that the pens in which horses were kept in more western parts (corrals) were called “CORALS” (pronounced just like the undersea invertebrates) and not core-AHLs. :lol:

Not the least of which was “surcingle” which for whatever reason I always read as ‘surch-ingle.’ The other, was the Black Stallion’s Son–never occurred to me it was Satan–as in the devil–I always thought that was the material, the shiny material, you know, “satin?” And the Black Minx will always, always be prounounced “minks” in my head. Not mink. :lol:

Dev - a -coo seems to be what all the trainers say - yet my French is telling me it should be “Dev - ou - coo”
ETA: wow - I had to go back and read that again. So…if we really wanted to get into the French - the “ou” sound is almost like “you”, but more with an “oo” start. Ack…too hard… I vote for getting the rep to say it !
Thanks guys! I thought about calling the rep from Devoucoux just to see how they answer the phone so I can pick up on the pronunciations. I’ll be like, sorry, wrong number! :lol: Hope their French accent isn’t too thick! :lol:

I’m fairly sure pronouncing it “air-ee-at” (rhyming with berry bat! 
) is incorrect.

“grackle”. As in “mexican grackle noseband”. I pronounce it so it rhymes with “spackle”… but that could be MY midwesterner accent. :uhoh:
I’m in MN, and around here folks seem to mostly drop the last syllable. Ariat becomes AIR-ee-ut, with the last syllable practically inaudible except for the “T” sound. It almost sounds like “air-yit.”
We pronounce many things oddly, though. Roof = ruff. Milk = melk. :lol: It’s cold here: that’s my excuse.

Hey some folks around here say “ruff” too! And “rut” for root. :lol:
I think gackle does rhyme with spackle. I remember going over this with my British instructor.
My friends and I say dressage but as a joke we sometimes joke and call it “dress -ige”

Huh live in IL too and always heard it pronounced air-ee-at shrug
Amerigo. I was corrected when I was saying “a-mer-ee-go”… it’s “am-er-ee-go.”
Mattes…“mats”…“mat-ez”…??
I took French. I have the saddle. I’ve heard it pronounced correctly: “Ahn-tah-res.”
And I still catch myself saying “An-tare-is.”
Whatever. That constellation, dammit!
Uh…around here it seems everyone (including people in tack stores) say Ariat that way. I just assumed I was right.
