Working Equitation or Doma Vaquera?

Hi all,

As a rather well trained “straight” dressage person, I’ve recently attended some Rolf Janzen clinics. He does Working Equitation and Doma Vaquera stuff in Germany (where he’s from and lives) and Europe. He is German but spent a lot of time training in Spain with vaqueros.

He has an exercise for everything, focused on the horse’s muscle movement and elasticity and brain. Brain is most important, as he insists on building confidence with the work. This past 3 days, I did my second clinic with him and was really impressed with his focus on the particular horse and using essentially bull-fighting moves to address engagement. Much focus on the rider. My horse’s gaits became MAGNIFICENT as much as my horse could do at the end of each session. Much work to do on my part to train this regularly. Of note: I had the only warmblood at the clinic, the rest were Iberian bred horses and the clinic was hosted by a large Lusitano breeding farm.

Has anyone else done clinics with real Doma Vaquera trainers to improve their dressage on non-Iberian bred horses? What did you think?

Well, count me out because I ride an Iberian horse.

Glad you enjoyed it and were able to find some useful tools.

No Iberians on my farm (my Dressage horse is a TWH :D)
But I attended a show at the school in Jerez and was very impressed with the horses I saw there.

I would love to do Doma Vaquera work with my Walker.
And not just so he could wear the sexy (to me) Repujada bridle

Hmmmmm…
I have a friend near Southern Pines with horses.
Is Rolf Janzen anywhere near there?

Not with a “real Doma Vaquera” trainer yet, but I have been doing some working equitation training with a trainer who started in dressage, and plan to do more next year with my warmblood. I am in SoCal, and it is becoming quite popular here. I could probably go to as many WE shows as dressage shows with similar travel.

Well, my horse is a Westfalen, and Rolf knows I mainly do straight dressage, but seriously benefitted from his individual approach!

Oh, @2DogsFarm , while I ride straight dressage, I’m so taken by the bullfighting saddles that many others have. Really beautiful and impressive! I sat in one on a stand and was pretty sure I wasn’t going anywhere in it despite what my horse did. Rolf is coming back to Siler City, NC, in March. PM me if interested, and I’ll put you in touch with the BO.

So cool, @MissAriel ! I love the “application” of WE and the associated exercises that aren’t geared to a 20,15, or 10m circle or a long or short side), and how the application reinforces the dressage training. I’m hoping to try some schooling shows in the area next year if they arise. Rolf Janzen is coming back in March, at least I have a goal!!! I am hoping to do a weekend cow clinic at our barn in June (hey, when do you EVER have the chance to move cattle???)

Thanks so much for your replies!
