One of my three new dogs has a worm that requires panacur -whip worms, a kind of round worm. Apparently, the kind that is often given to dogs is ridiculously expensive. The GSDx (who doesn’t show them in his fecal) would cost $70.00 to worm which sounds pretty ridiculous.
So, my new vet is willing to provide me the dosing information for my three dogs, but she does say that the horse panaur doesn’t specifically say that it’s OK for dogs. I’m thinking I should worm my cats with it, too.
So, I’ll get a tube or look in my med box for a current tube and give her the information about the tube so that she can dosage it out, but I thought I’d get comments here, too, if you don’t mind.
When I read elsewhere, there is some disagreement about using horse panacur for dogs. What I read seems to indicate that liquid panacur is OK but that paste pancur may not be. So, I’m still researching.
Do NOT give the paste, it is in a super high concentration and will kill your dog. They make a liquid it is in a square bottle for cattle and other farm animals. This is what is safe for dogs and cats. Most breeders that came to out clinic used this method to deworm their litters.

is typically what they use. It is still expensive and if you dose a large dog you will be giving a lot of it.
Disclaimer I am NOT a veterinarian. I would print off the page and confirm with your vet that that is what she wants you to buy.
Thanks. I’m still researching too. The vet was of the opinion when I talked with her that the paste would be OK as long as she gave me the proper dosage, which she is willing to do. She’s my new vet and I do think she’s a keeper, but I’m still doing my own independent research - and asking here:) since this really is an amazing place to get technical answers on everything from wells, to pool tables, to wormers. So, the vet will review whatever I give in advance, but I want to make sure that she is right. Again, I think she’s going to be my vet for the future, but it’s very new and I just want to make sure on this wormer stuff.
Thanks, I will definitely follow the link and keep reading.
So, would this be the same thing just in a smaller quantity? http://www.jefferspet.com/safe-guard-dewormer-for-goats/camid/liv/cp/I6-SK/
Thanks.
Your link said 1 cc for each 5 pounds. Elsewhere, I saw where it said 1 cc for each 10 pound, and here comments say dosage (for goats) is too low. I will definitely have my vet do the dosage, but I’m making sure I can question her if it doesn’t sound right. I do think she is a good vet.
Thanks.
We gave the dosage of 1 cc per 5lbs of dog weight so 70lb dog gets 14 cc… When we dewormed for whips you have to give it once daily for 3 days then repeat in once dose in a week,
The one 1cc per 10lbs is the “preventative” dose for hookworms and roundworms. If you know you have a dog with the parasites the 1cc per 5lbs is the dosage. Also whipworms are much much harder to kill.
Is that a vet price for the Panacur? Check at Southern States - they carry the dog version (the packets) and I think it’s cheaper. Our Beagle has had to do Panacur every so often because of coccidia.
Thank you Justmyluck. That is very helpful.
alterabian, yes that’s vet price and I’ll check out southern states, though it looks like the liquid panacur works and I may just by the larger bottle so I have it for my horses and goat as well as the dogs.
Thanks everyone!

Panacur doesn’t work on coccidia. Coccidia is a protazoa and panacur is an antihelmitic. This is most likely why your beagle has never cleared the coccidia.

I bought this - well the safe guard. I decided I could use it for the horses as well as the dogs - and I may end up with a couple more dogs.
Thanks for the link.
