Worming the mini

He’s a big mini, 37.5"

I know not to use Quest for the little ones, but how about Equimax at an appropriate dosing level?

You can use Quest if you know what they weigh, fyi. It’s just that Quest has a smaller window for error than the ivermectins.

Hopefully JB will chime in, but Equimax is fine for a mini. If you’re going to be guesstimating, guess high rather than low.

I use Quest/QuestPlus and Equimax on my mini mule. I don’t have a weight tape for her, but the vet and I agree that ~300# is pretty close.

And actually, as I have a 900# QH that I dose at 1000# she just gets the rest of the tube. So far I haven’t had any issues over 3.5 years.

Ivermectin is an appropriate choice for adult minis. At least once a year it should be combined with praziquantel to treat tapeworms.

For minis under a year of age, deworming programs are more involved.

Of the people I know who have minis, I think it’s roughly 50/50 who feels comfortable using moxidectin. The key is, obviously, getting a good handle on their weight. You can’t use the horse-appropriate calculations for that as they tend to be proportioned differently, and even when they look truly like small horses, I think it still doesn’t fit them right.

This is the most common formula for mini weight calculation I have found
(9.36 X girth in inches) + (5.01 X length in inches) - 348.53 = weight.

I have no idea how close that is for anything approaching dwarfism, fwiw.

So that said, if you do have the weight right, and there is enough body fat, there’s no reason to think moxidectin can’t be used. But you definitely don’t have to, if you get and keep a clean enough horse with regular FECs and using Equimax and a Power Pack. Yes, there is some growing resistance of encysted strongyles to the PP :frowning: If you go that route, I’d add a double Strongid for tapeworms. If you live in an area where bots are bad enough to warrant twice a year deworming, you still need ivermectin or moxidectin, so if you’re really wiggy about moxidectin for a mini, then either Equimax twice, or Equimax once, and ivermectin + double Strongid.

Thanks, that is helpful!

Personally, I’d never use Quest on a Mini, too many friends/fellow Mini people have had too many issues… shrugs

That said, Equimax is fine, we use it all the time.

I had my boy weighed once, when he was sick and needed meds the vet needed a true weight. He was 286lbs. He stands 35" tall and is huskily built, but not fat.

Chiming in for some help here. I have a dwarf, approaching a year old. In the fall we did 0.7cc of ivermectin as she weighed about 68 pounds. She will be 1 in April, she is a bit under 90 pounds now (helps that I can stand on the scale, then pick her up!). What would be appropriate for now? Equimax? I’d like to stay away from Quest.

Send me a message if you can JB!

I definitely would not use Quest!

That leaves Equimax. It’s so safe I would just do the lowest dialable dose you can, which I think is probably 250lb. If it goes to 200 do that.

When you say .7cc ivermectin, what form was that in? Did you treat for tapeworms at all in the Fall?

No tapeworms in the fall, straight ivermectin. Tested with high fecal count for Stongyle Ova (488). I brought a tube of ivermectin, and we tried to dose it got frustrated and she gave me a gel form of ivermectin from her supply (not like the paste I brought so we could dose).

Just called Biomedia (Equimax) lowest dose would be 220#, which is still a 2.4 overdose although they said their product is safe up to a 9x overdose. Wonder if I could physically cut it in half with a dose syringe?

I wouldn’t worry a bit about a 220lb dose for a 90lb mini. It really is quite safe, though definitely run that by your vet for a CYA. But certainly you could squirt that out and halve it

Foals of age 2-4 weeks were dosed at a 10x dose without any issues. Stallions were dosed 3x weekly for 3 doses without any issues. Pregnant mares got a 3x dose every 2 weeks from breeding through 3 months post foaling - fine.

I have a mini molly that’s a month old . She’s got spotting around her face. I read it was probably worms. My question is how much and what kind to use?
