Worming with capsules/tablets vs paste?

I practice worming with applesauce, my horses are well behaved, no hay/food in their mouth and I still have them managing to spit out what looks like half a tube of Panacur PowerPac dose.

I have four horses that readily eat Vit E gelcaps, Esomeprazole capsules, and Ranitidine tablets readily in their grain. Has anyone gone looking for tablets/capsule horse wormer?

It sounds like you’re squirting too much in at once, and/or not putting it in back far enough. If you do a small amount, far back, it can’t be spit out, it just smears its way around.

Are you talking about buying pre-made capsules (or tablets)? They don’t exist. It would be a LOT of capsules. Abler used to make pelleted ivermectin but they stopped. There’s pelleted fenbendazole and pyrantel pamoate but their resistance issues limit their use (not to mention they don’t kill bots or tapeworms anyway)

I suppose you could make a case to get ivermectin compounded, but I can’t imagine that’s very cost effective

What wormers are suggested for your horses? The PowerPac tubes are massive and high volume compared to most other wormers. It may actually be a non-issue.
Equimax and something else (ivermectin? My BO handles the worming so I don’t actually know off the top of my head) is all my horses have needed - and the tubes are small. Like UlcerGard small.

My almost 30 year old mare has become nearly impossible to paste worm. I’ve had her since she was 2, and she used to be fine with it. As soon as she knows the deal, she’s flinging her head all over the place to try to avoid even having it stuck in there. Now, I usually just squirt the tube into her evening grain. She’ll turn her nose up at it and refuse to eat it at first, but it’s always all gone by the morning. I’ve also tried attaching a straw to a bit and bridling her, then squirting the tube into the straw. You need to make sure there’s enough extra wormer for that, though, since a lot will get stuck in the straw.

Friends use liquid ivermectin, poured over feed.

I worm based on FEC, twice a year, Spring & Fall.
Ivermectin for Spring, Ivermectin/Praziquantel for Fall.
No moxidectin as I have a pony & a mini.

Paste is a PITA for 1 of my 3, the other 2 are easy enough to dose.
Horse & mini aren’t thrilled, but cooperate
Pony has to be put in a headlock
I still end up wearing paste, but enough gets in him :unamused:

If you put the tube in the bars, tilted back & up, squeeze to dispense & tap the palate to trigger a swallow, then elevate the jaw, you s/b able to get the dose in.

I squirted more slowly yesterday and had a lot less loss. Day three of also practicing with applesauce and two of the horses are now approaching and requesting applesauce “shots” un-haltered. Thanks for the advice!

Because I’ve had mostly TALL
high headed horses, I got them
wormed by putting paste in couple handsful of their pellets
add some water, and mix.
They know it’s in there but still
eat it.

Great! Also, don’t be afraid to push 1/3 in, remove the tube and let him chew it in, do another 1/3, etc, instead of trying to get the whole dose in at once

This. I don’t think I’ve squirted paste wormer into a horse in 20 years now. They all* eat it in their bucket - why wrestle?

*so far none were suspicious but YMMV…
