Worshipping at the feet of bullriding marketers

Indeed, this was the source of inspiration for the thread. Who would have thought in the glory days of the fall winter circuit (Washington, New York, Toronto) that bullriding would replace the hunter classes in New York? This is a very, very odd development. On the other hand, perhaps it’s an indication that the same old, same old approach to mounting horse shows in North America is in need of some serious rethinking.

I’d like to think there are some creative, fundamental, infrastructural solutions to what currently ails the sport - without showjumpers and hunters having to resort to cowboy hats and Wranglers. Not that there’s anything wrong with cowboy hats and Wranglers, mind you. Lovely man and talented rider he may be - I guess I’m just not ready for Hap Hansen in Wranglers.

The Bullriding event has nothing to do with the cancellation of the hunters at MSG. In fact, the bullring event is serving as a way to help pay for what’s left of the Natl’ to use the Garden. Otherwise, you’d be watching the Show at the Va Horsecenter or something. I sure wish Murray could have schmoozed the hunters into it, but I’m proud that he was part of the effort to run the Nat’l at MSG by encouraging his sponsees (PBR) to run their event on Sat nite. Remember, the hunters were out long before bull riding was brought in. It was NEVER an "Either-or situation. It won’t be the greatest deal for the Pro bull riding people, because there wasn’t time for them to hook up their usual TNN coverage, so they are being very generous helping the Nat’l by “filling the seats” to help pay for the venue for the days needed for the horseshow. They certainly could have said no, and gone to another arena with time to set up their usual coverage by TNN. The Garden is a very expensive place to stage an event, and this was a pretty creative solution, considering how little time there was to save at least the Maclay and some jumpers. SO please attend the Nat’l AND the bull riding. It’s allowing alot of people whose dream has been to show at the one and only Garden to come true this year.

And one way or another, let’s all get behind the movement to bring the hunters back in grand style!!!

Do you mean the fair Harold Chopping of the most intense blue eyes this side of the Mississippi? WOO WOO WOO!!

You beat us to it!!! Can’t believe you forgot him in your original listing!!!

Heidi, minor correction on the stupid cowboy. He doesn’t just “climb” on a bull, he TIES himself to it, with a very stout rope and pounds his fingers closed so he won’t loose his “grip”.

Can you say brain damaged? That would be before they opened the chute.

Ahem. Keep things PG, please. Thank you kindly…

Heidi if you have watched the Bull riding you would have noticed many wear both helmets, and protective vests. Some even wear collars to protect their necks.

It’s like any sport, when we don’t know much about it we think they’re nutz. Of course thats their take on us too!

I think ya’ll have linked arms and skipped and giggled right on past the mental gutter and headed straight for the uh, “mind sewer!” LOL

Quite entertaining, however

Teri, I’m aware that the hunter classes weren’t sacrificed to make way for a bull riding extravaganza; but your post addresses a couple of my concerns - why can’t hunters/jumpers draw the crowd commanded by the pro bull riders and why can’t we claim a sponsoring broadcaster? And you are right, there are many, many riders (of all disciplines) who toil, strive, and train for years in the attempt to attain whatever goals they may have; I’m just concerned that there may be fewer and fewer venues for english riders to achieve their goals.

BTW, the day my reformed smoker husband ventures into the house with a wad of chewing tobacco in his cheeks is the day he too will be waddling that funny bullriders strut.

I can’t believe I forgot him too, another fine Canadian import!!! But my heart does lie with the fine Canadian gentleman, Jair. Oh Mon Ami…

I agree with you all about the Cowboys tying themselves to the bulls, but damn, I would love a date with a man that can stay on one of those beasts for 8 seconds…LOL

Um, well, ah… not quite what I meant, but erin beat me to it.

I’ll stay away from it.

Okay, you very friendly girls. I have good news for you: My husband, Murray, is the President of United States Tobacco, which is the second largest sponsor of Pro Bull Riding behind Anheuser Busch.

Yes, the cowboys are VERY cute!! If you know me and really want to see the chute up close, or maybe even meet a couple of the guys, let me know!

AOTeriKessler@aol.com

I can’t accomodate every single one of you (God, there are a lot!) but I’ll try to hook a couple friends up, if possible.

Gaby Salick is pretty sexy

How right you are Teri!!! My father is a team roper, so I have seen my fair share of hot cowboys at rodeos. Plus, I got to work for TNN at the Lane Frost Memorial Bullride in '97 - I stood right at the chutes all night, holding the cords for the camera man - one of my most memorable experiences!!!

Oh, VT, NOW you have done it!!! How can KS go to the Associate VHSA show (in North Carolina, for the geographically challenged), if she is still drooling all over her sceptor?

Kennett Square, been there done that! He was a cutey too. However, you had better hope he had a good ride.

It can be a loooong ride back from the rodeo when his shoulder is wrenched out of shape, or he has been hooked in the leg(with bull horn) or he got hung up(that’s when that good tight grip gets turned over in the rope and you CAN’T open your fingers to detach from the 2000lb mad as hell bull).

You also have to get to where Absorbine Jr is an aphrodisiac. Ah this takes me back aways…

What DID you mean then?

I must get my head out of the gutter I’m

Baymare, I gotta agree with you, I love going to the bullrides ever wednesday…do I actually watch them ride the bulls…how can I tall, muscled men in tight wranglers! ok, let’s all keep our minds outa the gutter

It doesn’t surprise me that your friend is gentle…I think that’s part of the appeal. I know how we all felt about “The Horse Whisperer” as a film but how appealing is a rough tough cowboy when he shows his sensitive side?? Melt.

I think that’s also part of the appeal…and to heidi’s point, part of what makes a cowboy sexy besides those Wranglers which, I must point out do not look great on all of them!

Ohhh Teri your post suddenly showed up. We don’t know each other but I’m sure we’d be great friends!

Chris “Shivers me timbers” is quite sexy.

Ratings folks thats what it comes do to.

As they say in TV land - “If it bleeds, it leads!!”

DMK,

I am a woman of MANY talents, I can drool, lust, gaze longingly, torture bad riding children and miscreant animals all in one fell swoop! Not to worry the scepter will not rust or tarnish. Plus NC is the home base of the afore mentioned Mr.Harold Chopping… do I hear strains of the song “Love is in the Air”???
