WSTR (Tevis)

is on! John Crandell and Heraldic are leading the pack…Hot hot hot

http://www.teviscup.org/webcast/main.php

Thanks for the link~ I had forgotten that today was the big day. I love following the vet checks.

Heraldic won!

Heraldic and John won! And they looked good!
Congratulations!

Lots of pulls today, including Melissa Ribley and Heather Reynolds…

Some injuries, both horses and humans (a photographer fell off the cliff at Cougar Rock and broke many bones, he’s in surgery…)

All in all, another intense Tevis! It’s the best, we are all excited here in Auburn

I had 5 people I know riding (several clients). Looks like only one made it across the finish line. Looks like a good friend was pulled at Francisco’s, I assume for overtime. Now let’s see who gets BC.

Congrats to all!

UH-OH!!

Is this thread going to turn into one of those “let’s put barricades on the Tevis trail,” sort of conversations?

And I’m SO glad Heraldic is back in the game. That horse is so frigging awesome, and so many folks were saying he’d burned out too early…glad to hear it’s not so. I wish they’d clone HIM…

Just curious, but do they actually stick those horses to get the height, or is that just rider info?

Anybody know?

I ask because I found it interesting that very few of the horses were under 15hh, and since most of the are Arabs, that’s alittle odd.

Maybe it’s just my area, but I still find most Arabs to be 15hh or under. Maybe they really are breeding them bigger.

To the post above: Injuries happen, this is a dangerous sport and the WST is difficult terrain. I’m just reporting, please don’t read anything in to this that isn’t there.
We love Tevis and support it.

Not to worry – you may be sort of new to COTH, but last year (I think it was?) a horse/rider fell on the trail and the horse broke her neck. This lead to a heated thread of safety…and one poster wanted barricades put up on the trails…got sort of bizarre…

I didn’t think the thread was bizarre at all. It’s called DIFFERING OPINIONS. Some - myself included - didn’t feel it was in the best interest of the horse and rider, or the image of the sport, to have horses traversing extremely dangerous, narrow sections of trails with life threatening drop-offs in the middle of the night when it’s dark. Yes it’s a tough race and is supposed to be a true test of horse and rider. I get that, and I agree. It should be difficult. But when you have horses tumbling over cliffs because they lost their footing in the dark on very narrow trails, it becomes an issue of public scrutiny and animal welfare. Whether YOU or I think the trails should be amended to be safer in these very narrow and dangerous sections is irrelevant. What really matters is the GENERAL PUBLIC. You start flipping horses over cliffs and breaking their necks on a regular basis and you might end up with the non-horsey public shutting the ride down or viewing our sport in a very negative manner.

The Haggin Cup was awarded to The Fury. I did not watch the judging. I needed some sleep after riding. I completed at 4:47am. Awesome intense ride. My horse Boomer is amazing.

The photographer will be OK. One horse “left the trail” in the first canyon but was OK.

And yes, there are 16 hand Arabs. I’m amazed as to how big many of these horses were. I think 15 hands is plenty big, especially after 100 miles!

Debbie

SB you are amazing, training in Florida and coming out and mastering our Sierras. I am so impressed!

Here is the BC judging of the Fury - hope you can see the pictures ok. I particularly like his weight. And he is one big boy.

They don’t actually stick them  This is according to the owner…

Ah, well, that makes alot more sense. Yeah, there are 16hh Arabs, but not a whole lot of them.

It’s been my experience that most people over estimated horse height anyway…and after 100 miles I bet they seem even taller! Great ride, and a real test.

What was the overall completion rate this year?

Congrats to Dick and Christine of Toskhara Arabians on breeding TA TIRAN (Algonkwin X Tiranda by Bandos) who was 35th  It was his first 100m ride… congratulations to his rider Tim Reynolds too ofcourse!! (and after seeing pictures… dang he’s pretty. I know that means nothing for his performance… but it never hurts lol).

Congrats to all who finished!

Auventura Two, you have an amusing spin on the thread last year…wherein yourself, and perhaps others with little to no endurance experience, and zero experience even trail riding in the Rockies, nevertheless gave ‘expert’ opinions on how it should be done. If memory serves you were the one who declared that guard rails should be installed. The ‘difference of opinions’ boiled down to informed versus uninformed…

However, no need to derail and diminish the accomplishments of this year’s participants- so let’s don’t!

If you want to discuss it further Beverly - take it to a different thread. It’s a differing opinion, that’s all. Flipping horses over cliffs and breaking their necks isn’t exactly great PR for the sport. There has been more than one horse stumble and fall over a cliff on that trail. My point was that people need to be careful because at some point, outsiders might decide that the deaths are needless and silly. That was my opinion then, and it still is today.

Congratulations to all who finished. It was a hot year.

Confused— I thought Tevis applicants had to finish at least three hundred milers successfully in order to compete? Or was it 50’s and 100’s? I cannot remember! Someone refresh my memory?

Wow, he looks great! There’s also a video of him on Easyboot’s facebook page:

Thanks for that link - I can see me!

300 miles of 50s or greater are required now. In this area it is many people’s first 100. It was my first ride period.

Overheard that the guy who fell off Cougar Rock is out of the hospital.

Nine of the top ten showed for the Haggin Cup and as a group the horses and riders looked very good. Lots of neighs for their friends - kind of cute. I love horses…
