WTF Are We Doing?

http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2017/05/motorcycle_racer_dies_at_portl.html

I just wanted to post this article on the death of a motorcycle racer. Note that all other races were cancelled. The “show did not go on”. I’m sure there will be a complete investigation into the cause.

My heart goes out to this young woman’s family, friends and fellow competitors. She sounds a delightful person, it’s so sad she is gone.

Good for the organizers. I’m glad to see at least one sport showing respect for someone who dies while competing.

Just to clarify to @Gestalt, Emily did not pass away but suffered a TBI,

Yes, I didn’t want to post something like this on the thread about her. But I did want to show the comparison between other sports and eventing.

@Jealoushe - Gestalt was talking about the motorcyclist who died, not Emily

gotcha…thanks for clarifying

RIP Jaeda and All Aboard.

Heartbroken for Booli and for COTH’s own EventerAJ. Just heartbroken.

I have been involve in motorcycle roadracing (off and on) for over 50 years (started corner working when I was 12). I have, unfortunately, been present for several fatal accidents. I can’t remember a case when the rest of the races were cancelled. The show DID go on. And in at least one case, the public announcement of the death (which was instantaneous) was delayed until Monday.

The situation here is quite unusual for motorcycle road racing. (Not offering a judgement either way, just clarifying the context.)

Oh no, I just saw the news about All Aboard.

Absolutely heartbroken for EventerAJ - I loved the small updates, loved Ranger’s listing when fleur de luc posted it on COTH, and cheered for them from afar. Major hugs and jingles for you AJ. Life isn’t fair.

And now Dempsey has been euthanized. Fractured his ulna at Bromont, and had a post-surgical complication.

Adding Dempsey to the list. RIP :frowning:

I wish there was a way on this list to distinguish between sport-induced injuries and things that could have only been prevented by a breakthrough in medical research.

Jaeda suffered a acute diaphramatic hernia, All Aboard collapsed while galloping between fences, and Dempsey’s fracture occurred on landing from a fence. The list is just so powerful as is that I don’t want someone to be able to point to a couple names and say “see? There’s nothing we can do!”.

I guess I just feel that this weekend was more caused by horses than it was by the sport, as opposed to the many deaths as a result of hitting a fence or a rotational or whatever.

Regardless - condolences to all connections. I have just felt sick over this all week.

Why Jaeda and All Aboard both could have died in their pastures, it’s decidedly the sport that caused Dempsey’s injury, therefore, surgical complication, therefore, euthanasia.

I don’t believe anyone is saying “see, there’s nothing we can do.” More like, “hey, we need to do something yesterday.”

Until more research is done, I want to place the horses on the list even though it could be a freak accident. We still don’t know if the short format, supplements, etc are causing this to happen while on cross or not. It is sad all around but at the end of the day, three horses died this weekend while eventing.

Jealoushe I wonder if it would be beneficial to add the type of injury by the horses on the list. That way one might be able to quickly see trends (such as "____ fracture rotational fall, etc.)

That’s a good idea. One night when I’m home and have a glass of wine I will sit down and update it.

I saw Dempsey’s injury as something that could have happened elsewhere. An injury sustained during what was essentially normal use of the leg (albeit at a fairly high level, but certainly no trauma – horses are meant to be able to jump up in the air and come down again) indicated to me the potential for an underlying weakness. But that’s just my take, YMMV.

I respect that goal, Jealoushe. Their lives certainly matter, and anything that could have been done to preserve them is something we all want. I, too, like tldickinson’s idea! Though of course we all acknowledge this thread isn’t your full-time job – thank you for keeping it up
