Wug vs Neck cover.... come give me opinions!

hi guys!

So, as my horse’s career changes (lessens), and I face the fact that she doesn’t need to be clipped in the winter anymore (grows a great coat and we aren’t around an indoor anymore, so no need). We’re in the Boston area, with tons of weather. Always. So, as her needs change, naturally, her blankets should change too, right?! LOL.

Don’t tell my SO.

So, I’m looking for another heavyweight. I have a Rambo Wug, and a Rambo Supreme, and I’m debating getting another Wug, instead of another neck cover. She lives outside the majority of the time, comes in for really bad weather. I like the way the Wug fits her, but don’t know if I’m crazy for getting rid of the neck cover!

The other thing is that she has a spot of mane at the base of her neck, where her blanket ends under the neck cover that has been rubbed. But that’s really my only complaint.

Come pick apart my blankets! LOL.

I do neck covers mostly because the Wug style doesn’t fit. I think for lighter weight blankets, you could go either way most likely unless you are dealing with a lot of wet, in which case the more dry you can keep the horse with more coverage the better when they live out.

I think you’re fine with either. I’m in your neck of the woods and have two in Wugs and two in neck covers (all Rambos). I haven’t noticed any difference in comfort between the two.

Mine live out and while the ones in Wugs do get wetter on their necks they don’t seem to care.

I have some of each. If the Wug fits your mare, it’s fine to just go with that. I have 2 it fits well and another it rubs shoulders – that horse has a Rambo Supreme and it fits him wonderfully. You can’t really go wrong with a blanket you know fits well.

I really like the wugs as a simple, no fuss option that keeps them pretty dry from the rain.

Thank you guys!

As an aside, do you usually order a size up in the Wugs from their regular Rambo size? I haven’t in prior times, but before I make the leap I figured I’d look for opinions there, too!

I prefer neck rugs with a rug. Mine wear their rambo supremes and other compatible rambos including their optimos with different weight liners and have neck rugs both filled and unfilled.

I tried the wugs but they slid down on my warmbloods who have no withers, so they just did not work out when I bought them on sale years ago. I gave the wugs away.

The rambo neck rugs have never rubbed my horses, but weatherbeeta neck rugs did rub Callie when she got old and I discovered that my easy keeper ottb mare had withers.

I use Wugs on my horse that is stalled overnight, and rugs with a neck cover on my horse that lives out. This works well for me. I like the Wug fit. Not sure about ordering a size up- they do seem to fit a bit tighter in the chest area than an original cut Horseware.

I find the length of the Wugs to be the same, but the cut only works on some horses. It seems best on a longer bodied, horse with decent withers and a narrow to medium chest.

I have a med weight wug worn with an unfilled sheet + full neck cover when it is raining. This winter has been very wet in Maryland (more rain than snow) and the other horses at the barn without neck covers have gotten rain rot on the neck. My horses have only gotten it on their faces. So that confirms to me that if you have a horse out a lot they need the neck cover.

Also having the unfilled sheet with the neck is really practical for cooler rainy days (say 60s) to keep them dry.

I agree with this. I think if the Wug style is not a good fit for the horse, then sizing up won’t really help.
