WWYD? I'm old dog's only hope.

A WWYD question:
A 9-10 year old Min Pin mix was dumped at the on post vet clinic because a soldiers wife was pregnant and didn’t want the dog hair around the baby. My friend who is involved in rescue with me sends me a pic and info and says the dog will be put down because they haven’t had any interest and think they won’t have any luck finding her a home due to age. The vet agreed to hold off on euthanizing until tomorrow afternoon so that I can meet the dog. Dog is apparently pee pad trained and quiet. I have one very fearful dog currently who blossomed around other dogs and became depressed when she was an only dog again. Current dog’s trainer suggested a canine buddy again. I had a lab but sent him to the US as apartment life is no life for a lab. A small dog isn’t so bad here. But the added dog means added trouble of finding a pet sitter in Korea, added stress when I PCS, etc. So, WWYD?

Fwiw, I think I know my answer… If I go meet her I will be doomed for sure.

I’m a large dog person and a few years ago while working at a humane society I was in your position with a Min Pin. Only the one offered to me was 14 and blind. The owners surrendered her because they moved and said the didn’t want her to be coyote bait, whatever that meant since she was a house dog. Anyway to make a long story short, I had her for 3 years. She was great! She even ended up bossing around the big dogs. So you see where I’m going with this, go now and get her.

Oh, I’ll help enable you! Go get her!

Scierra- I am a large dog person too… The dog I have in Korea is a mini Jindo and is about 25 lbs… So much smaller than what I am used to. I’ve never had a tiny dog before.

Nine isn’t that old for a min pin. Two dogs really aren’t any more trouble than one. Especially when it comes to finding a pet sitter… they’re coming anyways.

Exactly what four mares said. Two isn’t that much of a huge change, and dogs are pack animals, meaning, they are so much happier when they have a ‘dog buddy’. Go get her.

Did I mention I am in South Korea and will have to fly both dogs home?

well if they end up being great buddies, they can share a crate ride home !

I have always had 2 dogs. They are really not any more work than one dog.
They keep each other company when I’m busy elsewhere. And as you said
your other dog needs a buddy.

Can you bring your dog with you to meet this dog ? Let him decide.

You can take the little one in a carrier under the seat. The other one rides in the air conditioned/pressurized area in the plane. And maybe some kind soul will ‘adopt’ your dog on their transfer papers, so your other dog is covered on your PCS orders. I think they used to pay for one animal to be shipped on PCS orders. If they pay for one animal PCS costs, then the bigger dog will be the official dog, because they charge by size, and I think in cabin is cheaper than pet flight in the pet area.

Have you made the call yet? You know you’re going to, so you might as well just get it over with.

I brought four dogs, a rabbit and a horse home from Okinawa - so roughly the same geographical region. It can be done.

Min Pins don’t know they’re little. They’re German Shepherds or Dobies stuffed into a tiny suit :stuck_out_tongue:

You need the dog, and the old guy sure needs you!

Min Pins really do seem to have a big dog personality. I’m a sucker, I would go for it.

Do you actually want the dog or do you just feel badly for her?

I do a lot of rescue work, and it’s hard not to bring home the wrong animal just because they’re in a bad situation. I always encourage people to take a step back & evaluate whether the animal actually fits their situation. If you couldn’t keep the Lab with you, what makes you think you can keep a MinPin? That’s not a snarky question, but you don’t want to feel overwhelmed again with a second dog.

Min Pins are great and nine isn’t old for small dogs! My friends small terrier is 11 and still winning in Agility and racking up MACH points.

I do a ton of rescue work here in Korea so I know where you are coming from. Someone just dropped off a 1 year old St. Bernard at the vet because “I bought it when I PCS’ed here last year as a puppy but didn’t know it would get this big so I don’t want it anymore”. Infact that’s how I got the lab. He was heartworm positive and two days away from being put down at the kill shelter. Have you ever had to keep a lab in a small apartment? He was a great dog but apartment life is no life for a lab. He was fine the first couple of weeks because he had heartworm. Once he was feeling better his energy came back and with my schedule I just didn’t have the hours to get his energy out. It broke my heart to come home at 8pm and have him bouncing off the walls. He needed a yard and someone who was home during the day. He was in no danger of being dumped again, but I was lucky and found a family through mutual friends who had just lost their lab. They had a huge fenced yard and a little boy for him to play with. Once he was done with his heartworm treatment I hired a private pet transport company to fly him to them in the US.

My current dog is pee pad trained and is super easy (I had her before the lab). If I work late I don’t have to worry about if she is peeing all over my apartment. Unfortunately I can not bring her to meet the min pin ahead of time, she is so mentally broken that even leaving my apartment is a terrifying experience. Plus she is currently at a training center.

I am fortunate to be able to bring the dog to work with me if she is well behaved. And they say she is pee pad trained which is a must for my current schedule… However if she isn’t, she is small and can be trained. I just don’t have the schedule for a dog who had to go for several hour long walks a day just to keep sane, like the lab did.

I’ll go meet her today. I want her but want to make sure I am not being impulsive. I mostly posted to write it out and a) make sure I still felt this way today after reading it and b) ask myself what I would tell someone in my shoes.

Fwiw, I know two dogs aren’t harder than one, I grew up with several and up until I came to Korea we had 5 dogs (my parents 4 plus mine, who is too old and frail to fly). I feel like Korea poses an extra roadblock in some ways but it shouldn’t be too much of a difference.

And???

So you got her right??
