X-treme winter trailering: Chains on trailer?

Thank you. I’ll look up that route. The real locations are Sisters and Salem, so even going up around Mt. Hood is long. I’ll bet this way would take even longer. But I might have to do this again before the winter is over, so I’ll open my mind to a longer, but chain-free drive.

I was just driving long distance in some cold weather last week through some snow, blowing snow and what looked like perfectly clear roads. When I was on the clear highway driving my Diesel and pulling my 31’ on the floor trailer I did not have it in 4 wheel drive. When I went up an incline the transmission down shifted and my wheels spun I started fishtailing. I could see the trailer in my side mirror pushing me and I was on 2 wheels ready to roll over. I tapped the brakes since I could not steer out of it. The trailer straighten out and I jolted down expecting to loose control again but it all straightened out.
I was really shaken up my horse did sustain some injuries when she fell during the ordeal.

I was thinking something on the trailer would have been helpful. Studded tires maybe. Not sure.
The worst part of it is the road looked perfectly clear. I guess I was on black ice. Can’t really have 2 sets of tires. My truck tires have 23K miles on them and plenty of tread but also may replace with something with more grip.
