XC boot recommendation

i’m finally buying my mare her own xc boots. She’s been living in oversized hand-me-downs for too long! What are the recommendations these days? This will be for lower/mid levels, a 15.3 hh refined and sensitive tb mare. I would like to stay below $100/pr… my last pair were Nunn Finers.

I like the Majyk Equipe boots a lot. I have a 15.2 slender-legged TB mare and the Mediums work well on her (and the same ones just work on the 16.2 TB). They are so easy to use, I actually use them any time I want some protection, and the fluffy dressage boots are just collecting dust. The MEs don’t move, are easy to rinse off, don’t seem to collect sand, and do seem to provide a good amount of ventilation–their legs are much less sweaty than they used to get with other boots. (Caveat: I haven’t tried any of the other new-tech galloping boots.)

If I have a critique, it’s that the stitching on the binding at the bottom tends to get loose/frayed over time, but I guess that means they’re doing their job, and that’s a pretty minor issue as it doesn’t affect the integrity of the boot. My hinds (which I bought secondhand back when they were branded Boyd Martin in larger font) are waiting for me to run them under the sewing machine. The fronts, which I bought new maybe 2 years ago and have used on two horses, are just starting to show signs of fraying at the bottom.

For low level stuff I always recommend Boogaloos! Had some of my pairs for 15 years. They hold up, dont hold water or heat, easy to use, clean and fit a majority of horses.

Another Majyk Equipe fan. They’re one of the few boots without neoprene, they’ve got dilatant foam technology, and mine have all held up very well.

My eventer-turned-driving-pony wears Mr. Stockings. Nice boots made in Germany. They stay on through 12k of marathon, including water and all kinds of turning questions.

I got a front and hind set of the Premier Equine ones. Only used fronts so far for trail riding and a lesson but going to cross country clinic next weekend so they’ll be put to the test.

I am only doing low level stuff but my giant beast of a horse needs a large size boot plus they absolutely must not slip. If his boots slide, his world comes close to ending. You’ve never seen anything more dramatic.

The lady I purchased boots from said the Horze cross country boots are a really good buy for their price point and great for low level stuff.

Thanks everyone. The Majyk and Premiers were two I was considering and some of the others I hadn’t heard of. For now I just have one horse they’ll be used on and for xc jumping and trail riding mostly. I’ll still use the fluffy white ones for flat work

I had the Premiere but was not impressed. They unraveled within a year of light use. I have the Dalmar boots now. Many people don’t like apparently because the strike plate can shatter, but I was under the impression that had been fixed when I bought mine. I do like them. Very good air flow and only one strap to attach instead of fussing with 3 to 5 velcro straps on each leg.

Another vote for the Majyk Equipe boots - they don’t hold water and they are the only boots that don’t rub my super sensitive mare. The inside is easy to clean too and doesn’t hold things like foxtails or cheat grass seeds. I’ve had them a year and they are holding up well so far.

I have the horze ones and like them just fine, but I just got a few sets of B Boots from Australia and I looooove them!

I just got a pair of Majyk Equipe boots for my 14.3 hander now that they finally come in size small. She’s only worn them 3 or 4 times, but so far so good. I have a problem with finding boots for her that are not too tall, and these barely work. Any taller would be too tall. Before these, and still in the rear, she has worn Woof All Purpose boots. I’ll eventually upgrade the rears to Majyk Equipe but wanted to give them a try before buying all four.

My ‘driving pony’ is a lean 14.2hh with very short cannon bones. Mr Stockings makes a ‘small horse’ size as well as a pony size.

I’m mentioning this because finding boots for a petite horse isn’t easy. ‘Horse’ is usually WB-size and ‘pony’ is usually for stocky-legged critters.

I had and liked the premiers for my TB. No rubs when properly sized and adjusted, very breathable, and most importantly they don’t hold on to debris from tall grasses and weeds. I also liked the extended coverage of the tall hind boots but YMMV, my TB is a freak with big long tree trunks for legs. I think they also make a ‘standard’ coverage hind boot now that does not go up as far.

My Premiers slip and turn when wet especially. Got the Majyk Equipe and the one time I’ve used them, no turning or slipping.

I have Dalmar front boots that I really like. I’m pretty sure I have medium for my 16.2hh OTTB. He’s not super fine boned but isn’t super thick either–he’s a light/medium thickness.

I also have Premier hind boots for him, which I love but he hates. They’re beautiful–they don’t hold water, they don’t spin, they don’t get hot, they provide lots of protection, they are close to $100/pair. So naturally he hates them–as soon as they go on, he comes unglued and becomes super difficult to ride (even if I’m just flatting in the ring.) I got him a pair of cheap-o Woof boots. They have no vents, no strike plates, no fancy anything. He loves them. His legs don’t get hot, and they don’t spin. They don’t seem to hold water either, although I haven’t formally taken him through water with these yet. He’s pretty careful with his hind end, so I will probably keep him in those forever.

Someone has the Majyk Equipe boots where I board. They’re beautiful boots, and I think the larges fit his hind legs and mediums in the front? I can’t remember, but the sizing seemed pretty true with that brand.

After all of the great feedback, I ordered the Majyk elite boots in black and red. I’ll let you guys know what I think. I ordered the fronts new and found a slightly used pair of hinds on eBay so I didn’t feel as badly about the price.

I think i may end up getting some woof wear (or Nunn Finer or Davis) lesser expensive boots for trail riding (I ride through some gnarly desert sage and bitterbrush). It just feels a bit funny to have four pairs of boots for my mare (dressagy white fluffy boots, open fronts, xc boots and trail boots). Probably could use the dressage sport boots for trail riding if it weren’t for the fact that they are white and hold a lot of water when we cross streams.

Does anyone know why Bit of Britain doesn’t carry any of the Nunn Finer boots anymore? It seems odd since the American Style boots were the most popular eventing boots for a long time.
