Yeah for Calvin & Mine that Bird!

Concrats to Calvin on that ride. When he rides I worry that he might want the rail too much and get stuck, but then, yesterday on Rachael, he proved he could ride off it too.

I don’t think the “cowboys” were rude, I think the dumb X#$!! broadcasters got what they deserved for asking dumb questions and carrying on about the drive he made. I love one of the owners who just answered back about strategy like they had planned all along to get choked off at the start and fall to last. Love it, some of those boys were a lot faster on their mental feet then the people interviewing them. And if the interviewer can’t figure out the “chat” is over, that’s his problem, like when the trainer in the walk over got away from him. Maybe, in a few years, he’ll be more diplomatic but for now, it’s a breath of fresh air.

I don’t know that the horse wasn’t “loved on” a little in the shots we didn’t see but it would not surprise me if not. Most cowboys I’ve been around, the good ones, are good with one pat or word and you don’t see the horse resenting their treatment. By and large, at least with the good ones, don’t abuse a horse when you’re around them by pulling on their mouths or banging around on their backs, telling them to “go” yet holding them back with the bit. You’ll hear about that.

Besides, it’s your first Kentucky Derby, you’re on crutches, and you have to navigate around a crowd and the horse.

I think this was just what this race needed.

Awesome race!

Mine That Bird won the Sovereign Award for Champion 2 Year Old Male here in Canada.
Guess a lotta people neglected their homework. Not Calvin!!

What a level headed pony he was in the post parade.

awww what a great story

Congratulations Calvin and Mine That Bird!!

I just happened to make it in to watch the race. I LOVED it! I especially loved watching from overhead (blimp camera). It really showed how well MTB ran and how well Calvin rode.

I’m another who totally enjoyed Calvin’s celebrations and was very impressed by how quiet MTB was after the race with all that celebrating going on around and on top of him.

I also wish his trainer had mentioned the horse when interviewed early (I’d have been loving all over that beastie - whether he liked it or not!). I don’t care how tired you are of stupid questions, when you win the frickin’ KENTUCKY DERBY you should praise everybody: the horse, the jockey, the owners, the grooms, the farrier, the vet…

Also, the trainer might have been a little tetchy because not only were they constantly on about the drive, he broke his ankle in 12 places and admitted earlier he was “feeling no pain” (ie had been doped to the gills.) If he’s on painkillers he’s loopy to begin with.

And who HASN’T wanted to tell off a reporter with a microphone and a stupid question?

Calvin’s last win in the Derby came at a time when he had medical bills to pay for his child -
any updates on his family?

The other guy in the black hat is a buddy of mine, Ralph. He is the GM for Double Eagle and also has a piece of the horse. I’m very happy for them. They are a fantastic group of people.

I hit my biggest wager of all time in the pick 4 thanks to Calvin and Bird. Congrats to them. What we saw was a horse beginning to peak against a sorry field of 3 year olds.

I had been scanning pedigreequery before the race for a number of the entries in the Derby and for some of the winners of the other races today and came across Smart Strike, MTB’s damsire, a number of times.

What’s his story?
Sire of CURLIN.

I loved the blimp coverage…does anyone have a link to it?

Congrats to you! I agree. They kept discussing the fact that there were so many nice horses that it was a tough field to bet. I wouldn’t say they were ‘sorry’, but there were no standouts in that group. I wish the filly would’ve run.

i don’t see the big deal about driving the horse himself to get to kentucky - how else would he get there? he’s at friggen sunland park - not exactly a hot spot for for sallee or brookledge or any other van company. we drive all of our horses in our trucks and slant load, in their nylon halters and with legs unwrapped and they get there just fine and dandy and race just fine and dandy. chip also stopped at lone star park along the way to give him a gallop but no one is mentioning anything about that.

between him and pepper’s pride, lately new mexico racing has a lot of accolades.

Smart Strike has been the leading sire for the last two years.

Probably because most horses don’t get driven halfway across the country to the Derby. And good for New Mexico.

You know, there is the perspective that this horse was simply over looked, and under rated. He WAS the Canadian Champ- he had a bad Breeder’s Cup, and he goes to NM. This certainly doesn’t make him poorly bred- there is some nifty stuff there- or a baaad horsie.

I like Baffert’s comment- “the Cowboys brought a nice horse.”

That 'bought sums it up, don’t it?

I think you are getting him mixed up with Kent Desormeaux who won last year on Big Brown.

I love the fact that a “initially Canadian trained” horse won the Derby. That was an amazing race!

he is a very interesting horse/ story, indeed… I am curious to see how he does later in the season…

Either way I am THRILLED for Calvin, such a deserving jock!!!

Great race! Cranky trainer. Instead of being rude he could have said “I’m off to the winner’s circle!” and hobbled off. I wish the trainers/owners would have acknowledged the horse - it makes me feel like MTB is just a machine to them. They don’t have to hug and pat the horse if he doesn’t like it but they could have SAID something about the horse to recognize his amazing effort! I think the race announcer was stunned along with the rest of us to see some horse in the lead no one recognized. So great!
