Yearling feed: gro n win & senior? Solution?

My yearling just isn’t gaining weight. She doesn’t look bad but her ribs are more defined than I would like and I want to take her to a show this fall. She has grown a lot in the past 6-8 months, she is already over 15 hands and I think going through another growth spurt. She is currently on 3.5pds gro n win and 2pds ultimate finish. Her coat and mane look great but like I said I want to put some more weight on before the show. She is out 24/7 but she never touches the hay bale. I was also going to add some alfalfa pellets to make up for the hay she doesn’t touch. I have thought about just buying hay but she in a small herd at the place I board her at and I don’t want to feed all of them. Ultimate finish just isn’t doing enough and I hate to max her out on the fat supplement. I tried her on tc growth and all we had was stomach issues. She was in a period of transition from barns but once I tried the gro n win all of the stomach issues stopped. I really like the idea of a ration balancer but I need more calories and fat. I was thinking about adding senior into the mix?

I know there are tons of threads about feeding young warmbloods and this is the solution I have come up with based on all of them and my research but I just want some reassurance that this is the best option for her. We had a rocky start with feed in the beginning with the tc growth so I am hesitant to change her feed unless I know it’s the right thing.

I feed Gro n Win and Cadence Ultra together to my yearlings. 4# of Cadence Ultra is the equivalent to 1# of Gro n Win. Since a yearling should get 2.5-3.5# of Gro n Win, that means they should get 10-14# of Cadence Ultra, which is a lot of concentrate for a youngster. I do a combination of the two. My 3 yearlings each get 2# Gro n Win, and 4# of Cadence Ultra, split in 2 feedings. They all look great and ready to show–well muscled, and shiny, not fat or ribby with a big belly.

If you want to add Sr, reduce the GNW. If, for example, the Sr calls for her to get 6lb, then you don’t want to add the GNW at all. Or, you can feed 3lb of the Sr and 1.5lb of the GNW.

TC Sr and Growth are very, very similar, but the Growth does have some oats in it. If that was the issue for the filly, it’s not there with the Sr and you might be able to put her on that and no GNW while she still needs extra calories.

Just don’t do the full amount of the GNW AND add Sr to it.

Yes, sorry I should have said that. I would definitely lower the amount of gro n win she was getting. I just looked at cadence ultra, maybe I will try that since she seems to work well with buckeye products. But, the NSC percentage seems kinda high at 23%. I feel like I keep reading that you want to keep that as low as possible for young horses?

It’s really hard to do better than TC Sr when you look at all the factors, including the NSC  And it really is, for all intents and purposes, pretty darn interchangeable with the Growth - it just doesn’t have oats

I feed mine Seminole Wellness Senior when they need it. This is in addition to their Buckeye Gro-n-Win. I don’t reduce the Grow-n-Win amount as I’d have to feed a lot of the senior which I don’t have to. It’s 10% fat & the glisten on it.
Also I’ve had wonderful luck with just giving oil. My favorite is AMD Alliance 3-D oil. Really puts a show coat on them along with fat.

My horses didn’t do as well on the Triple Crown. The NSC is 23, but I don’t feed a large amount. My horses look really good.

Add Cocoa Soya oil…a couple pumps in feed, then you do not have to overfeed with all the volume required with other feeds. Just make sure you are feeding the proper mineral balances for young horses to ensure good bone growth.

Which TC product? TC is a brand  Not all their feeds are higher in NSC. The only product in that NSC range is the Training formula - 22.8%. Only the 14% Performance is higher - 38.1%. Everything else is 20% or lower (ok, 20.6% :)).

I am well aware that TC is a brand. I’ve tried Growth and SR, as well as the 30% Supplement. I know the NSC is lower than that of Cadence Ultra, but it works better for my horses than the TC did. My horses ate their manure while on TC, and they do not when they are on Buckeye.

I guess my point is you said your horse didn’t do well on TC at 23% NSC. The only feed at that NSC is the Training formula. Growth is 13.9%, Sr is 11.7%, and the 30% ration balancer is 9.8%.

I was just trying to figure out which product, since some people try 1 product that isn’t appropriate for a horse and write off a whole brand because of it

That is not what I meant. Sorry, I should have been more clear–I meant the Cadence Ultra has an NSC of 23! I don’t think TC is bad, it just didn’t work well for my horses.

I get it now, yes, I was confused

This is exactly what we feed. We add 1 little scoop (two tablespoons) of 100% fat supplement twice a day together with a handful of ground flaxseed. Electrolytes when the temperature goes above 90.

I was just in the exact position…I contacted the head Nutritionist from Progressive Nutrition(formerly the nutritionist of Buckeye) as I was feeding exactly what you were …he suggested feeding Progressive Nutrition Pro Elite HF and adding Pro Advantage Grass Diet Balancer plus unlimited good quality grass mixed hay…and you could always add alfalfa or plain soaked beet pulp!
