My May 15,2012 Cunningham yearling colt is 15.3 in front and 16.H behind. This seems pretty big to me, but I have no other WB yealings to compare him to. He is very leggy, and although he is correct, I wonder if he will look too gangly for DAD? Anyone else thinking of taking their yearling to DAD???
One yearling (June) on the farm is almost 15.1 hh and the other is slightly over 14hh (end of July). Both are geldings. Neither are gangly, but no plans for in-hand shows either.
My yearling colt is about that big. I think he is huge. But while he is big, he isn’t too out of proportion.
I plan to show him in the hunter breeding in a month. If I can some how patch up all his bumps, cuts and bruises from being out in pasture all day!
Here is his picture from about a month or two ago.
OK, let’s see more pics then! Here is the larger and oldest of the two yearlings on his actual B-day in June. He is by Negro out of our mare Solana (Flemmingh x Nimmerdor) and boards with us since sold. Negro is 16.3 and the mare is also. He was 15hh on his birthday, and I figure he’ll be 17hh. He was 4th in N. America for KWPN-NA foals in 2012. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151722656991204&set=a.10151722656311204.1073741830.192796641203&type=1&theater. His damline is jumpers and is primarily Holstein, but he is a dressage type that will probably have a lot of jump too.
And then the Sir Gregory out of a Darwin x Flemmingh mare at 10 mos of age. He won’t be officially 1 year until July 31, and stands a smitch over 14hh right now. He didn’t go to an inspection since he was a late foal. Both parents are 16.2 and I estimate he’ll be 16hh, but hope a little more. The mare’s foals tend to be smaller as youngsters and catch up later. He’s looking great as a yearling, was a very fancy foal, but went through a butter-ball stage as a weanling. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151706385361204.1073741828.192796641203&type=3.
My WB colt (born 4/11/12) is 15.1h in front and 15.3 ish behind. all the string tests, etc said he would finish around 17h. he is very big boned but carries himself quite daintily. Some days he looks big and others i say ‘man you’re a shrimp’
That is pretty big for a yearling. I breed a few youngsters every year, and in general, they seem to be around 14.3 to 15.1 at a year old (and they can hit all kinds of lovely growth stages:lol:). I just measured my two year old who was 15.1 at a year old, and he’s just an inch shy of 16 hands right now. My two yearlings are just over 15 hands and 15.1 hands.
Growth rates vary, but I predict my two yearlings will finish at 16.1ish. Most of mine seem to put on 2 to 3 inches from yearling to 2 year old, then 1 to 3 inches to finish (usually more toward the 3 inches).
My trainer’s 2 year old is 16 hands now - and he was 15.2 last year. I think he’ll end up around 16.3.
In general, WBs mature slower then Tbreds or QHs, who often get most of their height by 3 years old (or even 2!).
15.3 at 12 months is on the tall side. Really. My 17h WB was 14.3 on the nose on his 1st bday. The general rule of thumb is to add 2h to the 12 month height (and then 1h to the 24 month height). But, that IS a general rule Some horses shoot up quickly and reach more of their mature height earlier. So, either he’s going to be “normal”, or you’re going to end up with a close to 18h horse :lo:
Compared to these other yearlings, my WB filly is a shrimp! She’s about 14.0-14.1 at the withers, 14.2ish at the rump at exactly one year.
I am hoping she’ll wind up around 15.3, and based on the coronet to knee measurement, that would appear to be on the mark (mom is 15.3, sire is 16.0.)
Indy-Lou, your babies are breathtaking!!!
At 13 months 1 measured 14.3 and string tests to 16.2 and the other was 15.1 and is predicted to mature around 17

Pretty yearlings!
But wow, your barn’s white walls are so sparkling clean, that impressed me as much as the attractive yearlings.
My yearling filly is out a 16.3 h mare and by a 16.1 hand stallion. She is just shy of 15.2 h at the withers right now.

I’m appreciating hearing about all the various heights of yearlings. Some of them really do have varying rates of growth it seems. I’ve had some that grew a lot in their first year then slowed down, others that grew steadily, and still others that started slow and kept going! Parent heights seem to be the most reliable predictor overall.
Is that your Roi du Soleil filly Kris? What height do you guess she will mature at?

Yes, this is my Roi du Soleil filly. I expect that she might end up similar to her dam’s height, about 16.2 - 16.3 h. I raised her dam, grand dam, and now her from foals, and she is a similar height to her mare line relatives at this age. Her dam is a bit taller than the grandam, but but both in the 16.2-16.3 range, and this dam line seems to have pretty quickly growing young horses who don’t change height all that much after 3 years old (maybe only about 0.5 inch).
Beautiful filly, Edgewood!!
My filly is shy of 15h at 14 months old. Daddy is Dauphin (16 1/2 hh and mommy is a feminine Brentano II mare with Trakhener blood, shy of 16h) I guess she will mature around 16hh -16.1 hh.

Wow, these are some gorgeous youngsters!
I’m still hoping that my filly’s “withers” (such that they are), catch up to her very well put-together hindquarters. Some day  The right pieces are all there, they just need to “match.” Still hoping for that 15.3…
Out of curiosity, we measured our yearlings today, they both were May foals, so they are 15 months or so… Both are 15.2 1/2 at the wither, and higher behind.
Here is the filly, at a show a week or so ago.

Really appreciate the replies…
And especially the pictures. all of them seem more filled out than my guy…he looks like a bigt rangy thoroughbred…always a little leaner than I would like.
sixpoundfarm…lovely filly. Did she win her class??
Thanks Claudius, she did indeed.
