Yearling suddenly drinking a lot

This has only been for a few days I believe, but my yearling colt is suddenly drinking a lot more water, especially during/after his feeding. He has been on the same feed for a long time, a large pellet (McCauley), so that has not changed. He will now stop mid-grain and drink, and then drink after as well, which he didn’t used to do.
I have been trying to think what is different, he was on copious antibiotics a month or two ago after his (bad) gelding experience. Maybe an ulcer? Would an ulcer make him reach for the water like this?
Everything else seems fine, he feels really good.

Increased thirst can be a symptom of kidney or liver problems, diabetes or other metabolic disorders in dogs, cats and people. I assume it can be the same in horses?

Excessive interest in water can be indicative of ulcers.

Yes, ulcers can make them want to drink more.

Did you use any probiotics while he was on the antibiotics?

What has your weather been like?

No, he wasn’t on probiotics. :frowning: The weather has been up and down, I don’t think that is it. Is it best to scope or just start him on something and see?

He didn’t just discover/start chewing on his salt block did he? Just a thought… Hope all is ok!

It never hurts to toss one on UlcerGard for a week or so. If he goes back to normal, you will know.

I also would say ulcers…I would get him on Ulcer meds right away will not hurt!!!

I agree it sounds like ulcers, especially since he is doing it doing while eating grain.

Thanks so much, I am on it!
