My older mare foaled on the 23rd - BIG healthy filly. Everything textbook. Today the mare has blobs of yellow discharge. Her temp is normal, she is eating/drinking/acting totally normal and fine. Called the vet office and they said this is normal, discharge is a normal process - but should I be more concerned if it is thicker/yellowy?
My mare foaled on the 18th and her back end was a mess. Nothing damaged, just very swollen and tender and bloody. Also a very big filly, and her first foal. She also had a thicker, yellow discharge for a good few days after foaling, and a slightly elevated temperature, half a degree higher than usual for her. I kept her clean with warm water, only on the outside, mostly on her coat where it was getting sticky and nasty. Cleared up by itself within half a week of foaling.
If her attitude/appetite/temperature changes, or if it starts to smell bad, or changes colour then I’d get the vet to come out and see if there is an infection. Otherwise I’d give her a few more days to clean up by herself before getting concerned.
