Yellow Fibers in Poop

I’ve got an OTTB mare that is coming back from emaciation. Saw some of her poop this evening and it has what looks like yellow nylon fibers throughout it. It’s been raining and humid the past day or so, is this a type of fungus? I saw 2 piles from her with it, didn’t notice any others with it. She’s pastured with 2 donkeys right now, get alfalfa, extruded feed, and grass.

Did you pull the fibres out of the manure and see what they were? If they are incredibly sturdy, then they probably are just nylon fibres. Maybe she ate some bailing twine, now or in the recent past. Is the twine on your hay yellow?

Did she eat a piece of fabric?

Is it undigested hay?

Is it worms?

If it was fungus growing on the manure, the fibres would be quite fragile, I think.

I think you are the only person who can really answer this, and you might have to get your hands dirty!

They didn’t feel like nylon, they were all kind of soft and disintegrated when pressure was applied. The only nylon thing she has access to in that bright of a yellow is the handle things on water buckets. I didn’t see any chewed off, but it was dark and I’ll be able to see better in the morning.

She doesn’t have access to fabric of any sort.

Twine isn’t yellow, it’s orange or green on my bales.

I don’t think they are worms, she hasn’t been wormed in just over a month and they aren’t a very natural sort of yellow. They’re a fake sunshine, artificial banana, more yellow than a lemon type yellow.

It’s fungus, probably, growing on the pile post-deposit.

Agree. It doesn’t take long. Checking manure after an hour or so is pointless. Anything in it might have found its way there post-deposit (great phrase!)

Yellow-ish fungus is pretty common. Not sure how long it takes to grow but I wouldn’t bother even looking at poop if you didn’t see it hit the ground.

Are you sure they’re not pinworms?

Definitely not worms, when I poke it, it pretty much melts. Took a closer look at the picture just now, and I think they’re tiny mushrooms. My eyesight isn’t fantastic, but at this point I’m fairly confident it’s fungus. By this morning the stuff was gone. It’s not nearly as humid or wet today. Thank you everyone!

What? No photos??!

It won’t let me post any, can’t figure it out!

You can upload them to a photo hosting site, then post a link to them here.

Ah ok, that makes sense! I’ll get one posted soon!

sound like fungus; many species are possible

consider it a good sign of healthy environment, I guess

summer to autumn is typical mushroom season.
