Yet Another New Horse - It's Peach!

He has become a chonky boy!

Woowee! You’d never know that was the same horse. Go Team Peach!

:joy: I meant the horse was ‘sloppy’, he’s kind of a piggy… We’re having a hot dry fall so there’s definitely no mud here.

He is! Ironically, he is not a hard keeper… I have him on free choice grass hay (coastal mix, not anything fancy) and a ration balancer plus some beet pulp. For him to get so thin he must’ve had very little access to food.

He’s doing so well! His feet are still recuperating, but I’m looking forward to getting him into work soon(ish). He just got a new wardrobe to prep for the rainy season, too.

He’s really a joy to have around. He has the “old soul” OTTB outlook, and I forget sometimes that he’s still just a baby brain, but I imagine when we start work that will be more evident :joy:

Very Late coming back to this party
Firstly, sorry about the loss of your Bestest dog :sleepy: Never easy.

Peach looks great :ok_hand:
Seeing this pic reminded me of the QH my DH shareboarded with a sweet older lady who only wanted to trailride. Same chestnut w/flaxen.
DH showed him as a Hunter, took him over his very first 3’ course - a 1st for them both
Horse registered as Skip M Spots, but our trainer at the time wanted to show him as Malibu Ken  Just sayin’, if he gets to a showring…

It’s ok, I’m pretty late to my own party :joy: it’s been nearly 5 months and I haven’t been good with the updates.

At this point me ever getting back into the show ring would be a miracle! I’d like to think it will happen, but I am so busy right now and it seems I never have both the time AND the money :joy: but he’s only 4, so there’s plenty of time.

A little Sunday afternoon lawn mowing…

It’s been unseasonably warm for October, still touching 90 most days. If it doesn’t calm down soon I’m going to have to clip everyone  but the forecast is calling for some rain late next week so:crossed_fingers:

What a handsome hunk he is turning out to be. Seriously nice eye candy.

Sorry for the lack of updates - not much to tell other than letting his feet grow out and focusing on the rest of the weight gain, just being a pasture puff. I gave the riding horses the winter off and I’ve been a tad slow getting back to it this spring :grimacing:. His (front) feet are still a work in progress, and he will probably end up in front shoes so he can work comfortably this year.

That said, he looks halfway decent now. Don’t mind the llama head/neck pose, he was somewhat annoyed that he was not being allowed to eat the grass  Hopefully I’ll get some proper glamour shots done this year.

Several things to share real quick before I run out the door…

Shoes are lined up and test fitted, just need a dry-er day for gluing. We had a quick n’ dirty thunderstorm last night so it’s HUMID today.

I put the young man on the lunge line for the first time today. I know, I know what you’re thinking: you’ve had this horse for nearly a YEAR and haven’t even lunged him?! It is true. He’s no longer lame, but his feet are still dealing with distortion and as we’re heading into the hard ground months he will need some protection for those soles, hence the shoes.

On to the lunging.

It was more or less what you’d expect of a green 5yo OTTB. Lots of jigging, leaping, scooting, and bucking, interspersed with wanting to stand on top of the emotional support human (me) when things got too heavy. He did give me two good solid flat-footed walking circles at the end. We’ll be spending a goodly amount of time learning the basic riding horse skills on the ground before I swing any leg over this little red dragon.

Good news! Now how about Bo? If there’s been an update I’ve missed it.

I did not see him in April, but I should be going out there soon! I’ve been missing him lately (not the feed bill, tho!).

Understand the feed bill part! I have a 31YO a 21YO and an 18YO on my feedbill.

🫠 ouch!

Yup. That’s what my bank account says a few times a month. Don’t get me started on the racehorses that are stuck in my departed SO’s estate that my DD and I are taking care of.

Are you me?
28, 22, 16 here. All special diets!

Sorry you’re stuck with dealing with that :frowning: I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it on this thread, but Peach is the biggest ingrate. I love me OTTBs but many of them expect the same royal treatment they got at the track

He will NOT eat the hay that falls out of the net (but he will pee on it). He will NOT eat the coarser stems of the alfalfa (which costs $500/ton and is trucked in from two states away). He throws his grain on the ground whether it’s soaked or dry. He refuses it completely if I even try to add salt. He mindlessly poops wherever the mood strikes. And most recently, he’s taken to dumping out his water tub daily. He will do all this, and then stand at the fence and YELL at me that he’s STARVING and needs MORE FOOD.

Frankly, it’s a miracle he’s this fat.

Don’t mind the mud, we got nearly 4" of rain in approximately one hour last night.

Long lost cousins perhaps?

Fortunately ours are doing okay on a beetpulp & alfalfa pellets mash and some regular feed and lots of hay. :crossed_fingers:

Oh boy, he better be worth it in the long run. He’s a very good looking boy.

BTW, by this areas standards, that barely counts as mud. You’re not going to sink in up past your ankles and struggle to not leave your rubber boots behind!

I have a mare who sounds like she went to the same - how to train your humans - training camp as Peach did. Same freaking things.

“Oops, I peed on my hay that you just tossed into my stall so I am now starving to death and I am going to make a scene because I am starving to death.”
