Yoke style stall gates

Destructo-pony broke his wooden stall gate for the last time recently, and being unprepared, we replaced it with a standard pipe livestock gate because it was the only thing handy locally. Trouble is, he’s a short guy and it upset his apple cart to not be able to hang his head out and watch the world go by.

Now that I have time to research, does anyone know of a company that makes stall gates that come in 6’ width, that are either a yoke style or short enough in height that horses can hang heads out? Preferably something sturdy, too, because he’s kind of a tiny bull in a china shop. MUST be 6’ wide though, that’s the opening width which I cannot easily change and I’ve not found that size through any of the usual retail options.

might be simple to alter the doors opening without changing it

We took a standard 12by12 stall modifying it to contain two stalls for the miniatures.
Nothing was altered in the 12by12.

The modifications were all attached from the base up then the base board was attached to the stall walls.

Stall has since be changed back to a 12by12 which took less than 15 minutes since nothing had be done to alter the stall

@clanter how is that center post configuration attached to the ground?

My problem is, the opening is defined by a 4x6 in the center and a 4x4 on the end which is part of the building frame. Short of setting another post (or pulling and resetting the 4x6) I’m not sure how we could make it narrower but sturdy enough, and I am loathe to pull up the mats and wreck the base underneath.

In the long term, I plan to completely reconfigure how this barn is laid out with all new stall fronts and a shedrow style, but for now I’m stuck MacGuyver-ing things together :joy:

C&P does custom work, I think? And their stuff is STURDY. Might be worth asking them?

I think they use ebay as their storefront, their old website seems to have gone poof.

@Simkie thanks! I wonder if it might be worth it to just commission a local fabricator and save myself the cost of shipping these things. I think DH has a friend who is in the business.

This pony is HARD on stuff. He’s a 14h, 1000lb wrecking ball :joy: he’s not even trying to be naughty, he’s just dense. His pipe gate is already slightly misshapen after 2 weeks.

it is not attached to the ground but attached to the base plate (2by6)… the center post is screwed from the bottom side of the base plate up into the post. The same method is used on each end of the base plate but those are 2by6… the end verticals are screwed to the walls.

Nothing is attached to floor

A local welder can make whatever gate you want.
We use 1 7/8" tubing for our panels and gates.
Is relatively light, but extremely strong.
We had big cattle hit those hard and didn’t bend anything and still flexed a bit so they didn’t get hurt.

One such a gate made to order would not cost any more than the standard commercial stronger gates and it would be whatever size and shape you need.

I think this company could make you a custom door https://americanstalls.com/stall-doors/

I’m not sure if their gates are customizable.

That sounds like a great way to go!

Most any welding shop or commercial fence company, like those that put up fences for builders, or sell to contractors that do, would make whatever gate you want.

We had a local welder fabricate gates for my barn.

I have ARC Systems stalls, and they were great to work with. I have an 1890s barn with odd dimensions and he cut the pieces to custom width without any extra charge. I noticed they have drop-down panels on their stall doors, I didn’t get that option but I am very happy with the quality of their stalls…
