Yorkie behavior & cats

I bet someone here has been through this sort of thing… Ms Yorkie arrived at our house almost 2 years ago from a household where she was treated like a cat - no house training, no obedience (though someone prior to that had done puppy class, we discovered), no walks or exercise. Incredibly shy with people and had no doggy social skills or doggy identity. She’s made tremendous progress in every area, but now we’re seeing a little rebound overconfidence??? She’s started growling and chasing the cats.

At first we thought maybe she was trying to get them to play - she’s starting to ask dogs to play, so we were trying to tell if she was approaching the cats with similar body language or intent. Most recently, it looks more like an actual “chase to catch” attempt. Sometimes growling, sometimes barking (barking makes them run, which is more fun to chase!). Definitely worse when we’re around, as if she’s doing it somewhat for attention, but we know she does it when we’re not around if she isn’t crated, based on the cats’ behavior when we return.

Cats all have their claws and very healthy self-esteem, except one, who pees in our bed when the Yorkie chases her – if it wasn’t for that cat and that problem, we’d probably just laugh at the 7 lb Yorkie Terrierista barking at the 14-lb bruiser cat, but this kitty doesn’t find her humorous and we’re sick of changing the bed.

Other things Ms Yorkie is starting to do include shoving her way through the door before Ms Labrador (Ms Lab is pretty laid back but will occasionally remind Ms Yorkie of her place in the world) and ignoring some boundaries (jumping into the driver’s lap in the car, a BIG no-no). So maybe we need to go back to some leash work and obedience stuff and reestablish her place in the social system? will that help with the cats, or will that make her more determined to boss the cats around? two separate issues? strategies for dealing with Terrieristas? I’m a Lab person, these tiny dogs sort of boggle me…

It may have started out as play, and maybe she even means it as play now. But…if YOU don’t like it, it should stop.

What I would do, is to split her off physically when she is chasing the cats. Walk her down, walk between her and the Victim Of the Day, and then move into her space so that she has to move away from the cat. Act like a cutting horse, and move her where YOU want her to go. You may have to do this multiple times before she gets the idea, but I would never allow her to practice bad decisions. I would not want my cats to be put in a position of defending themselves or for THEM to learn bad behavior (like peeing on your bed).

As for the door behavior, she needs to learn her name, Ms. Lab needs to learn her name as well and then YOU decide who goes out the door first. I have 4 dogs, for a long time, all had to wait in a pack behind the door threshold and I would call them out one by one. Sometimes the dog being called out had to force their way through the group and I did this deliberately to teach tolerance. My order would be random. If I had dogs rush the door, they went on lead, when an unauthorized departure happened, the lead got shut in the door with them on the wrong side. That put them outside ON LEAD with no ability to go anywhere. That didn’t happen more than a few times.

So maybe we need to go back to some leash work and obedience stuff and reestablish her place in the social system? will that help with the cats, or will that make her more determined to boss the cats around?

she’s not trying to boss the cats around, she’s treating them like prey animals. Yorkies, believe it or not, are ratters- originally bred to chase and kill rats.
Yorkies can and do injure/kill cats.
You shouldn’t leave this dog alone unsupervised with the cats. The cats should always have safe escape routes.
Obedience work is always good, helps you control the dog, but it won’t affect the dog’s prey drive towards the cats or affect the dog’s relationship with the other dog.

I have a friend who has mini schnauzers. The ones she used to own (she lives in the UK now) would actually work as a team and go after lizards. Yup, little toy foo foo schnauzers. I was really surprised to see that.

My yorkie poo, who is very respectful of our big Snowshoe cat, actually went up to her barking when the PekeAPoo was having a hissy fit over new kitty. I’m sure the cat is 2x the weight of the YP.
