your alfalfa sources in NJ and cost?

i recently began to supplement my mare’s diet with a bit of alfalfa. i’ve been buying this beautiful mid western grown alfalfa from a local feed store and am very happy with the quality but it’s pricey ($40 for the large three string bale).

i’m curious what our local NJ alfalfa is like and how much it costs?

I am probably little off here, but I am in VA, so I thought, I would share.

We buy at TSC- a compressed bale for approximately $19 (rounded up). It is dusty, but not in the moldy kind of way. Horses love it. It is our first year, we feed from a bale. We used to use cubes.

We feed just itsy-bitsy portions, only through winter, so it works for us.

Btw., we could not find anything local. This comes from Midwest, I believe.

how heavy is that bale you get for $19?
the alfalfa bale i buy for $40 is also from midwest. it’s also compressed. three string bale. 100+ lbs per bale.
i know people grow alfalfa around here but i wonder if it’s all cattle quality.
i’m in the same situation as you. using a flake per day to keep the weight on my elderly mare who was getting a little thin on us going into the winter. i guess if i have no choice but to keep buying it until the end of winter i will…

Here is the link on COTH discussion about the hay, we buy.

Eeeh, I do not know, how to post it better. Sorry.

I think, you might have a better deal or, at least, just about the same.

I dust it off a little and feed it without soaking. Our horses do not eat wet hay though.

So far, they never went hungry and thus think, they can pick and choose.

One more thing… When you go through the posts, there is someone from Maryland, who claimed to have gotten 40 pounds for $ 3.-…

You might consider sending them a PM.

Btw., our horses do enjoy the Standlee version very much.
