Your favorite consignment shops?

I have finally come to accept that my tack room is starting to reflect my hoarding tendencies, and needs some downsizing. I splurged on new dressage saddles for the boys recently and when they arrived, there was nowhere to put them

Given that my tackroom has 8 racks and I only have 2 horses that get ridden regularly, this seems to indicate that a few things need to find new homes.

I have generally sold my own stuff on Ebay and Facebook, but the last couple of transactions on FB have been a PITA, and since I have a bunch to rehome, I’d like to consider sending it all to consignment. I’d love to know who people are using these days, and equally - if there are any places to avoid.

For saddles, Fine Used Saddles is fantastic. I know she doesn’t take every saddle that comes her way, so she may not be able to take all of yours, but worth checking for sure!

Thanks! I have purchased items from FUS before… they were great to deal with. Unfortunately their website indicates that they aren’t currently accepting any items for consignment. Sigh.

The one in Oregon is very much not the place for your tack or your style of doing business. JMHO, but that’s from first-hand experience. I don’t think the two businesses are related at all; the Oregon one was home-grown (by a different owner than the one it has now).

OP, do you care about the fit between your tack and the stuff the place sells? Do you care about consignment percentage? Is this dressage or hunter/jumper tack? You probably know the usual suspects in the H/J world. I think there might be a place in MA-- Hobson’s Choice?-- that does a dressage business. Skyline Saddlery in NJ is all over Ebay and Maryland Tack Exchange (also on Ebay and off) looks like it will sell both kinds of saddles. I believe there is/was a place in FL called Apple Tack or similar who did a lot of dressage saddle consignments.

I sent a dressage saddle to Highline Tack in NC, primarily for the consignment rate. I’m not sure it will sell there, though her selection and pickiness about taking it suggested to me that it might get sold that way. This episode is the one where I learn that part of what you are paying for is the business being known to people looking in the discipline and level of quality that you have.

Pelham Saddlery in NH does a decent volume of dressage saddles, including fairly high end.

I do care about the fit between the shop & the gear. It’s enough tack (4 high end dressage saddles, one mid range dressage saddle and a very high end h/j saddle) that it is going to be a PITA to pack it all up properly and send it somewhere, so in a perfect world I’d like to send it all to one place and have a single point of contact.

I care less about the consignment percentage than the volume they do; in other words, I’d gladly pay a bit more for a high volume place that will get the stuff sold promptly than I do about getting the highest possible price somewhere that takes longer or has not so great communication. Maryland Tack Exchange is the first one that came to mind - they used to have a deal where they would buy a saddle outright for a 30% cut and that would have been ideal, but they have so much inventory right now that that isn’t an option. I had forgotten about Skyline but that is a good suggestion too.

@Lucassb… Bam! I think you have the right places in mind. Even before I got to the places you named, when you listed your criteria, my first thought was “Maryland Tack Exchange.” But let’s see if someone else can help figure out the Florida place that does a lot of dressage consignments. I think they import saddles, too. If you will go down there this winter, you could ship them all in your own trailer tack room.

And a note disclosure or context for my recommendations. I’m basing my sense of Maryland Tack Exchange and Skyline Saddlery based on their consistent presence on EBay, plus the kinds of saddles I see them listing. I don’t know how/why I found the Good Apple website, but it did look good to me when I was looking for a source of dressage saddles.

Awww, thank you!!! Please feel free… I have now also run out of bridle racks, and I really thought that 24 would be enough. You know, since there are TWO riding horses in the barn… sigh. It’s a compulsion, this tack shopping!!

Just buy another saddle rack :winkgrin: and hang on to them. You’ll find yourself needing the saddle you sold and will regret it.

Some good consignment places have been mentioned, there are some to avoid, a quick search on COTH might help. Also, check about how they make payment, some only pay out on certain days of the month, like the last day or what ever. Twice I discovered the consignment(s) shop I sold something had some delayed payout system and it took a couple of months to get my money.

Yes, I think you are right! Lucassb, that’s what I was thinking of. Looking at Good Apple in Ocala, I don’t think their selection looks like your saddles. I’d always send my saddle to the place that sold others like it.

LOL… that is how I ended up with 8 saddle racks in a barn with 4 horses, only two of whom are ridden with any regularity!!!

I have been looking into various consignment places and my goodness some of the policies are, er… off putting to say the least. It makes me just want to put some saddle racks in my storage room and be done with it!
