I am looking to buy a horse after years of partial leasing.
I would like to hear from you all about your favorite go-to reference book for veterinary and care guidance.
Thank you!

Read the Pony Club manuals - all three of them.
Not a book, but http://www.thehorse.com/ has up to date info. These days, it seems that information is obsolete the minute it’s put on paper.
For books, I have a Merck Manual that is still valuable for basics. I subscribe to Equus–they usually have at least one informative article.
I’m also interested in a good basic first aid book. Would the Merck be good, or too detailed? I know you can find everything on line, but I don’t have internet access at the barn, and when I try to Google things on my friends’ smartphones, we tend to go down rabbit holes of websites where the full version isn’t available.
Plus a book still carries authority. You can print something off the most authoritative website and people will say, oh, that’s just something you found on-line, it’s just an opinion.
Put it between hard covers and people respect it a lot more! Part of having a good first aid book is when people ask me for advice, and I know the answer, I can also point to the page and say: I am right, call a vet, or whatever
the best book you can buy is veterinary notes for horse owners by captian m horace hayes frcvs is rather thick i have the 16th and 17 addition book gets larger every addittion lol been going since 1877
I have
“The Horse Owner’s Veterinary Handbook”, Thomas Gore et al.
“The UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine Book of Horses”, M. Siegal
“Dr. Kellon’s Guide to First Aid for Horses”, E. Kellon
“The Merck Vetrinary Manual”, S. Aielo et al. (New edition on the way.)
And as goes limestone mentioned, the “Veterinary Notes for Horse Owners”, M. Horace Hayes.
More than I hope I ever need! I also have a collection on anatomy, physiology, conformation and ‘fitness and function’ type books.
Scribbler, I also think Dr. Kellon’s first aid book is very helpful. I also have one titled “How To Be Your Own Veterinarian Sometimes.” Good for those who live in the boonies.
