Your favorite mane & tail conditioner?

For years I have been using Healthy Hair Moisturizer (“the pink stuff”) for a spray-on leave-in conditioner on manes & tails. I like it, but am wondering if I’m missing out on something I might like better. Please tell me about your favorite go-to conditioner.

Infusium 23 leave-in conditioner mixed with a little bit of coconut oil.

For what it’s worth, I keep coming back to ‘the pink stuff’

Garnier fructis the orange bottle for damaged hair. Smells amazing too

I have used “head and shoulders for men” (I currently have a gelding ) and I usually follow up with a separate contidtioner. When I can and don’t need the anti-flaking of H&S, I use a separate shampoo and separate conditioner. I really scrub into the dock. I don’t go all out, but I buy decent brands.

I think I only comment on mane/tail-related posts because that’s all I feel even remotely qualified to weigh in on…

I use OBX Argan oils on my guys’ manes and tails (either the oil or the oil spray). It’s stops the breakage and really keeps them untangled. I’ll swear by it forever.

I also was a big fan of the “Tresemme Conditioner Keratin Smooth Color” (found on Amazon) that I used after washing thoroughly with Suave the other day. It left my guy’s tail really moisturized without any greasy feel. I followed it up with the Argan oil much lighter than usual and it’s been tangle free and really hydrated ever since.

I really love washing with a 2-in-1 shampoo/conditioner and using cowboy magic!!! it really is magic for manes and tails. It makes them soft and helps keep them from getting tangly!

I use whatever leave in conditioner I can find on sale at Walmart or the drug store! I have a grey, not possible to use any oil based product as that attracts all the dust in the arena.

I like coconut oil. It works well as a detangler and makes the hair very shiny.
Normal conditioner can also be used as a leave in conditioner. Just use about 1/4th what you would use if you were going to rinse it out.

If your horse has decent hair genes, you don’t need to do much externally. If they get a balanced diet, maybe some extra flax seed won’t hurt for omega 3. Then get the cheapest products you can find. I use Suave as it’s frequently on sale at $.99 for either shampoo or conditioner. Only use it before shows so you don’t strip natural oils from the skin. Pick out shavings, etc. by hand and brush infrequently…benign neglect! My 3/4 TB always gets complimented on her gorgeous mane and tail. I shampoo it about 4-5 times per year.

No products will make a naturally poor-haired horse suddenly grow more - no matter what it claims. I’ve had many people complain their horse has a crappy tail, while they’re dragging a tail brush, making ripping sounds, through their horse’s tail!

I use Canter by Carr&Day&Martin. Love the stuff!

I use Cantu, Pink, and Infusium products…they don’t seem to collect as much crap as coconut oil.I mix the pink stuff with Infusium to thin it out a bit and make it easier to absorb. I love adding the Cantu moisturizer right after a bath and the tail just soaks it right up. But its only good when the tail is damp, I only wash the tail maybe 3-4 times a year with shampoo but the softness seems to last a while. I generally only hand pick unless their is some craziness going on.

Last summer my kids made horse hair bracelets and cut a good half dollar circumference out of his tail close to the bone. The hairs are just below his hock now so I have to preserve all tail hair. His mane and forelock are thick and luscious, but not the tail.

Cowboy magic for the normal rinse out conditioner. For a leave in, I am a fan of Vetrolin Shine for detangling and a clean feeling, but hands down my new favorite is Equifuse’s leave in serum for conditioning and detangling. It’s the only one I like on manes also.

TOTALLY second Canter Mane and Tail. I’ve used the pink stuff (and still do) and use the shampoo in varieties too…but for spray on leave in, this one is amazing! https://www.amazon.com/Canter-Mane-Conditioner-liter-spray/dp/B002KQPRE6

Canter Mane and Tail for sure. It works to keep the hair soft and detangled for days afterward. It’s kind of pricey but it helps that you only need to use it once a week or so.

Coconut oil is great, plus provides a little bit of SPF for sun protection. Not much, maybe 10-15 SPF? But at least it provides some.

Also, I buy any cheap or on sale human conditioner but I make sure it’s sulfate free. I think that’s key. Sulfate free won’t strip the hair of the good oil that it needs, it’s better for dry/brittle hair.

I will have to try some of the recommendations above as well.
