Indeed, always so many. Ones that immediately spring to mind:
From a very sage groom at the racetrack:
“Ain’t no body can hold no hoss.” “Ain’t no hoss can run faster than a body kin ride.”
From Arthur Kottas: “Take your time, but don’t waste your time.”+ “CONTROL YOUR BODY!!”
From Sally O’Connor: The primary avenue of communication between you and your horse is the horse’s back.
From Steinbrecht (???): “Calm, straight and forward.”
From Xenophon (sp): “where knowledge ends, violence begins” + “nothing forced is beautiful.”
This isn’t dressage related but it is one of my favorites…
“My treasures neither chink nor glitter, but gleam in the sun and neigh in the night.” -old Arabian proverb
from my trainers
‘ride with intent’ (said by a hunter trainer for riding over fences but it applies to everything).
‘I think she’ll do best working on ‘forward’ first’ (said by my trainer when I was concerned horse’s nose was not ‘in’ during my 2nd lesson starting back to ride as an adult when I had no seat whatsoever so ‘on the bit’ was a long way in the future).
‘the horse you lead is the horse you ride’ from a young horse trainer
I enjoy all the others that have been posted also.
Here are my favorite quotes.
Source: good quotes about life
- Beauty is not in the face; beauty is a light in the heart.
– Kahlil Gibran - I love you with all my heart, I gave you all I always did everything I could just to see a smile on you… Why if you see me trying, crying, hurting, fighting you still play me like a fool and I hate the fact that after all the damage that you cause me… I would still go to the end of the world for you.

- The Smile on my face doesn’t mean my life is perfect. It means I appreciate what I have and what God has blessed me with.

This was one of the quotes on a little sign in the barn I purchased, and while I love learning from human trainers, it is so good to sometimes just listen to our horses to know what’s working!
Wow. A 5-year-old thread found by a brand new poster.
" the horse does all the work"-general public perception, particularly athletic coaches.
Charles de Kunffy’s skinny little book has a section at the end of the book of pearls - his one-liners.
Love all of these! And perfect timing too . . .
Sometimes it’s fun to resurrect old threads.
I’m going to butcher this I’m afraid, but it was in a clinic I was riding in with Bill Woods on a particularly hot, nervous mare- “The seat must be able to absorb the energy from the horse like a sponge, and then redirect it forward”
“Beware the hobby that eats…”
