Your favorite saddle cases / zip on covers

I need three saddle cases to store saddles at the (dusty) barn:

  1. a jump saddle
  2. a Reactor Panel dressage (ie long panels and long flaps)
  3. a regular dressage saddle

What’s your recommendation for saddle cases that are:

a) fleece lined or otherwise non-scratchy
b) accommodate all the styles above
c) zip or otherwise close to keep dust out
d) can sit on a stand and be carried too

Does anyone have opinions on/experience with:

thanks!

I don’t have any of those, but BOTH my dressage saddle and A/P (both kieffer – 17" and 17.5") fit in my kensington roustabout dressage saddle carrier, at the same time. It has extra pockets for things like pads, girths, etc. That thing is huge, but not cumbersome.

I won this one from Schneiders as an award - http://www.sstack.com/saddle-bags/dura-tech-elite-collection-english-saddle-case/. It’s similar to the Schneiders one you linked to but a little bit different. However, I do have several of Schneiders Dura-Tech bridle bags made out of the same fabric as the saddle bag and they’re fantastic. I like my saddle case a lot - it zips most of the way around so easy to get the saddle in and out, very cushioned but lightweight. However it’s definitely for a hunt saddle, so if you’re looking for one case that you could switch around for all three of your saddles, this one wouldn’t work for your dressage/long flap saddles.

The Wintec bag should do it. It’s “dense”, not “lofty like the Schneider’s case. The trick is to find one b/c they don’t come up for sale often. I had a modern Wintec Pro Dressage 17” in my bag and it did fit easily. Here’s one, but it’s in the UK. I think these were only offered as a promotion for 1 year or so. I think mine celebrates some anniversary of Wintec.

I own both the Wintec bag and the Schneider’s Duratech dressage / cutback bag with the mesh pocket. I have the Duratech here at the house. Not sure where the Wintec bag is at the moment. I’ll go take some measurements on the Duratec. bbl I really like the Duratech bags. They launder well, too. Mine are from 2002-2005 but I don’t think they changed the sizes.

The Duratech: The top front piece is a gusset thing, to allow clearance for a pommel.
Laid flat, zipped closed: front to back (across the top) 32", front to back (across the bottom, a straight line) 29". End to end is 54" - 54.5", measured where the back side of the handle is attached.

I measured an older (1990s) case that Hartmeyer’s used to sell. It is also 29" x 54".

I measured an old 1990s “Coverall” brand, and it’s 28" x 50"

Those are all models that were marketed as cutback / dressage. I use them for saddleseat cutback saddles.

The Wintec case is not here. So, it’s packed in my storage unit, and I don;t have time to go dig it out right now. I’ve had the Wintec dressage saddle and also a Thornhill 24k cc, a Passier PSL VD AP, and a few different cutback saddles in it at various times.

There’s no reason you can’t put a hunt saddle in the Duratech cutback/dressage bag, but it’ll be oversized and a loos fit compared to a more sculpted hunt saddle case.

To be honest, it’s easy to pick up used “sculpted” cc / forward seat cases on ebay and Facebook tack swap pages. If color doesn’t matter and /or you don’t mind someone else’s monogram, you can sometimes get them for maybe $20 - $25 shipped. I just bought a used one for $22 shipped, on ebay, and it’s long enough for a dressage saddle.

If they are sold as “cutback / dressage,” the bags will be longer front to back because some of those cutbacks are as much as 24" or 25" from front edge to cantle now (don’t get me started on that rant, lol.) There are some cases designed specifically for dressage that will be shorter front to back, and longer side to side. I had a Tough1 or some such brand that wasn’t made to accommodate big cutback saddles. It was more fitted (shaped) to dressage saddle lines.

thanks guys! seems unlikely an RP saddle will fin in any of them but worth a shot.

I have owned the Kensington Roustabout and this case from Schneiders:
http://www.sstack.com/Arabian-Bags-Cases/Dura-Tech-English-Saddle-Case-CutbackDressage/

The Schneider’s one is fricking cavernous. It’s designed to hold a saddleseat cutback saddle, so it’s huge. My 17.5" dressage saddle absolutely swims in it. On the downsize, the zipper is kind of cheapo and flimsy. It worked okay for a few years, then it started splitting open after I’d zipped it.

The Kensington Roustabout is also pretty cavernous. Google informs me that it’s 54" x 34", and that seems about right to me. The build quality is top notch, much higher than the Schneider’s bag. It also retails for 2.5x the cost of the Schneider’s bag, so that’s kind of unsurprising. I bought mine on Ebay for $60ish when Kensington closed out a color.

Cutback saddles have long trees, but comparatively short flaps. The Shively MMX and 2000 and MMXtreme have shorter flaps than what used to be typical for a cutback. The Schneider bags are cavernous, but I’m not sure that they will accommodate extra long dressage flaps.

Here’s a Roma bag that looks long-flap, but I don’t know anything about it.

I had a Tough-1 dressage saddle case that was definitely long-flap friendly, and it would handle 'way more flap than my Schneider bags, more than I needed for cutback saddles. I sold it, though. It was $40 or so on ebay. Looked like http://www.ebay.com/itm/All-Purpos-English-Horse-Saddle-Carrier-Travel-Case-Bag-420D-Quilted-Padded-Red-/271062544587

Bit of Britain will make one http://www.bitofbritain.com/Bit-of-Britain-Custom-Saddle-Carry-Case-p/0773-0774-0775.htm?gclid=CL6F-cPA-scCFQEMaQoduawPew&Click=36033&utm_source=googleshopping&utm_medium=shoppingengine

Bought my saddle cover years ago from Dover–their own line. I have a Passier GT dressage saddle and it fits just fine. Zip close, light fleece lining, relatively inexpensive.

The 21st anniversary Wintec blue saddle case that has “21 years” embroidered on it measures 26.5" - 27" front to back, and 50" from side to side. Those cases are probably from 2002 or 2003 or so. They were included free with the saddles for a brief time. (I was sorting through some things in storage and found this case that I mentioned earlier. It fits a 2010 Wintec Pro Dressage 17". It fits a 20" Lane Fox cutback, and it might fit most 21" cutbacks.)

Horseloverz has a few Wintec 21st saddle cases for only $9.88, with free shipping. Can’t beat that deal!

Going fast. Only 10 available as of this writing, and 14 have been sold in past 24 hours.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing. I’ve been looking for covers but they’re usually SO expensive. These’ll work great

I snagged 2. Looks like most buyers bought 2 or more. The listing didn’t last long. Mine don’t have the 21st anniversary logo on them. Shipping was slow, but tracking shows it was due to USPS.
