Your Favorite Snaffle Bridle (under $350 or so)

Yes, this is an old topic. However, manufacturers are clearly changing their sources and leather quality, so I ask the community again to weigh in on the topic. In 2018, what do you suggest for a nice snaffle bridle? I would love it more if the flash were optional or clearly built to be removed, but I’m willing to slice and move on.

I think my adorable mare should have a new bridle—just because. Currently she is wearing a Kiefer Anja Beran. It is quite good for being a $200 bridle (actually, I’ve bought two of these and both were good. The first one was trashed in a runaway incident where all were unharmed—except the bridle…). Suggest away.

Thanks!

I just got a Passier Neptune (ordered from Germany) for $250 that I quite like. I think the US retail is $500 but these things are much cheaper in europe.

Solo Equine! About half the price, can’t beat the style or the quality, and they have several different models that I adore. My favourite on my horse is the Solo Splendour but it wouldn’t look good on a small dainty head.

Bieman Riding (BR) - They’re a dutch brand. Very nice leather (and i am a massive leather snob).

I’m in Australia so can’t help on where to buy in the US but i’m sure someone over there would stock them. They run about $270 here plus reins are about $60.

I wanted one of these, but everything is patent, which I do not like at all.

My BR rolled leather bridle is ok for the price. I got it for around 90 Euro. I am not really satisfied with the quality so I’m still on the hunt.

Eponia is good quality for the price and they have a removable flash option. There customer service is terrible and they’re not great at keeping things in stock (1+ year in some cases) but if they have what you want and you like it, then it should be no problem. Just don’t try to buy another set of reins or a cob noseband (non monocrown) from them. They’ll send you the wrong item a few times and eventually give up and say they don’t have it in stock…they don’t know their own products very well…I have spoke to/written to customer service in USA and Europe. Product is ok, but just a warning on the service.

Caveat: I bought my bridle from DE over 16yrs ago.
I was in a hurry to get a decent black leather bridle in time for a clinic.
IIRC, I paid less than $125 then - cannot recall which model - & it has held up nicely with minimal care (:uhoh:) from me.
Still using it on current horse - he is #4 to wear it.

Thanks for tips and ideas!

I purchased a passier scorpius bridle (with shipping it was just about $300) and I quite like it. They have a decent lineup of bridles in a reasonable price range, so you can look for different shapes/specifications if you’re into that. I also liked that I was able to get it as a standard cavesson and not a crank.

I like Stubben bridles for basic classic design and good quality. I have two black secondhand snaffle bridles, plain cavesson, one as new and one previously well loved. The older one has lost its shine but is very nice quality and holding up well and the newer one looks just as high quality. They are also not the most expensive option. I just cut the flash loop off and use the useful flash strap to MacGyver various things for trail riding :).

If you look at the Stubben main European website you see they do many many designs and everything is available in four colors, black dark brown chestnut and tan. And of course different sizes. And they have cranks and anatomical crowns on some models.

On a previous thread it seemed Stubben tied with a couple other options for best quality. I have never gone searching for anything better but certainly haven’t felt better leather in the high end tack store. When my fingers walk through the tangle of black strap goods they tend to pause on Stubbens, as I see when I check the labels.

I picked mine up for about $60 each with good reins. Didn’t know the brand when I grabbed the first well used one at a tack sale but liked the leather. Raced to get the 2nd as new on local CL a couple years later.

I think if my older bridle was brown leather it would age better. Old black leather gets a dusty look.

If I was feeling extravagant and needed gear I would definitely buy a new Stubben bridle.

Now, I don’t know about hunter world, but they have really nice strap goods over there. The Edgewoods look interesting for old school quality leather (and incredibly high prices). But they aren’t black and this is a dressage thread, and I’ve never seen one in use.

BR is okay for the price but I won’t buy one of them again. I like the options they have, which was my main reason for purchasing – but the quality doesn’t blow me away (it’s not terrible either). I think it’s a good option if you want some more bling or specific hardware.

I still really like my Eponia bridle, which was ~$175 including reins. The flash is completely removable and the tab you slide it through is hidden inside the bridle. I have heard some people have been unhappy with the customer service; I met some of the owners at Equine Affaire a few years ago and they were very, very helpful - I didn’t know if the full would fit my horse, and even though it was a sale item, they said I could return it or swap it if needed. I appreciated that. FYI I found that the full is fairly generous in size - my guy waffles between Full and OS, and their Full is almost too big cheek-wise for him.

I have a Passier Ingrid Klimke, which is dressage’d out to a special crank cavesson and brass hardware in black leather. It is a beautiful bridle to look at and feel, but for the leather critic, you will notice the stitching is uneven in a few places, and the keepers uneven, and the bridle I received was scuffed on the nose which I wasn’t thrilled about. IIRC I paid $275 for this bridle and would not buy it again. Passier does have differnet levels of quality though; the Boston, for instance, is very nice and is much better quality than mine.

I do think that Stubben and Courbette are consistently the best options for leather quality in black today. I love Kieffer as well but have not had a new one in several years.

I think I must be the only one who doesn’t like Stubben products. I have had two Kieffer bridles for dressage and have been really happy with them. Currently using the Comfort Paris model.
The PS of Sweden Bridles look nice too.

Solo Equine is great bang for the buck. Although many of their bridles are pictured with patent nosebands, they come in plain leather as well

How do you order them without patent? I only see patent options for most.

I adore the leather on my Albion bridle. You can have a pain cavesson if you want and every part comes in every size so you can create a fairly custom fit. They’re $$ in the US but the prices on them in the UK are reasonable. I have bought through these people and would do so again:

Jeffries Premium bridles look wonderful as well. I can’t help but thinking they’re made by the same people who make the Albions because the shape and the way they can be customized is the same. http://www.ejeffries.co.uk/c/premium_ir-bridlework

You just select patent /non patent where you would select the color. I do see they are out of stock on some of the non patent bridles. I would just shoot thr owner a message. He is very responsive to questions. He was kind of enough to swap out browbands for me on the bridle I purchased

I’m close enough to Bartville Harness shop to get my bridles from there. Custom ones were about $200. I have a black one, a light chestnut one, and a light chestnut with blue leather padding and blue rubber on the reins for jumping. It’s the same leather as the Nunn Finer products from Bit of Britain.

This is similar to the light chestnut bridle, except plain head piece and noseband and rubber reins. It cost me about $150 about 6 years ago:

My newer dressage bridle (the black one) has a noseband that’s adjustable on both sides. It cost about $200

My custom chestnut/blue one is similar to the chestnut one, except the blue accents and cost maybe $200 and a 6 week wait. I got it with a matching neckstrap (think martingale without the martingale part). Like this: https://www.nunnfiner.com/Argento-Running-Martingale-p/293.htm
Except no running martingale, but still the girth attachment and a ring where the the girth strap attaches to the neckpiece - it is purely as my “safety belt”.

I also have an all nylon all blue bridle and neckstrap that cost about $50 or so.

My horse has WAY more clothes than my previous horse…

My horse and I both love the PS of Sweden bridles. I have the Paladin because the flash is completely removable and the anatomical features (especially the shape of mono crown headpiece and the placement of the cheek pieces) made a significant improvement in my ultra sensitive mare’s comfort and performance. I love the look and feel of the leather and the easy change brow bands make it quick and easy to add some bling for shows!

I madly in love with PS of Sweden bridles.
