I haven’t bought a new coat in years, so it’s time to upgrade from my wool-blend Pikeur. I don’t want to spend a ton because I don’t show as often as I used to, but would like something with more modern, lightweight, stretchy fabric. What’s good these days?
My heat tolerance is terrible–I have one of the AA Motionlite coats and it is perfect for summer showing. I have an older tech-material Pikeur short coat which is way too heavy for hot days, but I think the newer ones are lighter weight. I had my shad custom made by Jo McCracken because I couldn’t find anything I liked. It’s a light weight tech material with mesh in the arm pit/underarm area and is not unbearable in the heat. It was super reasonably priced for a shadbelly, and she does short coats too.
wow what a great idea to get a custom coat. I’ll look into it!
Equiline is my favorite. Motion lite don’t fit my body type well, too long even in the smaller sizes and the mesh coats tend to wrinkle when you wash them (had that issue with the FITs as well). Equiline is breathable but lasts beautifully.
Last summer during the July 4th sales, I ordered 4 coats in different styles, tried them all on and returned 3. The one I kept was the SmartPak Piper. Really nice coat for the price, lightweight and fit (me) well.
I like the AA Motionlite colors, but sadly the coats themselves fit me oddly. RJ’s Harmony is made of a similar meshy fabric, but with a non-mesh front panel; I’ve got two of those now (blue and green) and quite like them.
