Ego 7
And Ariat close contact
I show in both as a show jumper not my Division classes but all schooling
I have a wide, short calf and appreciate the extra elastic. I picked up a pair of breeze half chaps from Ariat and love them. Look very bootlike but flexible, admittedly not as sleek as the close contact version. They just didn’t have enough stretch for me.
Thanks guys!
These half chaps are on the pricey side for what I was looking for - though they are quite nice!
Question to @woops about the Ego 7s - how grippy are they? I don’t want “ye olde smooth leather half chaps that LOOK good on the outside but cause your lower leg to slide around” once you’re on the horse
What are your thoughts on grippiness? (If that’s a word!), also the Ariats. I’ve had Ariats in the past but it’s been awhile; I’ve been riding in my Tuff Rider Suregrip tall boots for the last several years - I have two pairs, one for daily riding and one for shows/clinics/schooling off property - but my every day pair has “bitten the dust.” I love the soft but grippy panel on the inside of the calf, especially for jumping (I’m an eventer - obviously) since my mare has a nice thrust to her jump; it definitely helps keep my lower leg where it needs to be, so would like to replicate that as much as possible in a half chap.
TIA!
I had to make them grippy with that brick grooming tool but now they are great .
If you want grippy out the gate - Ariat close contact or
Contour - that is the same chap - can’t remember which name is more current. By far the best grip -
Hmm, okay - thank you! That’s very helpful.
The last pair of half chaps I had were Tredsteps “deluxe” I think. Which were supple and I quite liked over my usual Ariats. But I transitioned away from half chaps for everyday riding a couple years ago when I bought my first pair of zip up tall boots: Mountain Horse Sovereigns which are even more supple and just as easy (or easier) to take on and off. They’ve held up amazingly well for regular use.
The Sovereigns are a bit spendy, but a good pair of paddock boots + half chap isn’t cheap either. You can certainly find something less expensive if you don’t have my crazy tall calf and have more fitting options.
Grand Prix! Pricey but soooo worth it. Buttery leather and they last forever.
I like the Kerrits Grip Tech half chaps. I’m on my 2nd pair in about 8 years:
Thanks, Spuds!
Probably more up my alley $wise than the ones that cost as much as inexpensive tall boots; I would be wearing them for flatwork only since I like my grippy tall boots for jumping, but they sound great - especially for the price!
My one concern is the zippers, one review said that if you are “older” they are hard to zip; I am 65 and have a lot of arthritis in my hands and low back and knees, in your experience is zipping them up an ordeal?
I’m over 60 too and the zippers never hang up or are hard to unzip or zip. No problems so far. They clean up really well too, I just take a damp sponge to them and wipe them down. And they’re grippy.
Agree that Grand Prix half chaps are the best on the market by far.
