My guy is almost done with his Omeprazole treatment and I would like to put him on some sort of maintenance/preventative but there are so many out there I am having a hard time choosing. What better way to get some insight that asking COTH so what’s your favorite?
I like keeping food in front of their faces at all times and U-Gard pellets. Fancy disagrees and thinks SmartGut tastes better
I’m trying TractGuard starting this next month to see how that goes.
He has hay nearly all the time because he’s a very slow eater
My gelding has been on U-7 for about 5 months without any signs of recurrence. He was on SmartGut before that and still had some flare-ups and chronic diarrhea. U-7 has been absolute magic for him.
We have been happy with SmartGut Ultra.
Alfalfa hay, plenty of it.
My gelding has had one of the most wicked cases of ulcers one of our vets had seen. We have been through hell and back. I tried SmartGut because several friends recommended it. Personally, it did not work for us. I tried U7 by Finish Line and liked it. Unfortunately it has cinnamon in it which I am deathly allergic to, so feeding it was virtually impossible for me. Last year (December 2013), someone mentioned Opti-Zyme by Manna Pro. She had a horse with a very severe case such as mine. While the directions say 1 scoop a day, that it for an animal such as a goat or sheep. Horses and cattle generally get 2 scoops per day. She advised me to do a “loading dose” of 2 scoops in the morning as well as 2 scoops in the evening (with feedings). With the loading dose, I noticed results within 6-8 weeks. After that, I reduced him to 1 scoop in the am, 1 scoop in the pm. It worked for perfect maintenance. I only increase to the loading dose, when we have crazy weather (like recently) or we are moving somewhere. I have been very pleased with the product. It works for hind gut ulcers as well. I also switched my horse to a different feed with a low NSC and pro/prebiotics (Sentinel LS). I also feed 2 lbs of alfalfa pellets each meal along with unlimited forage. We have had great success and a very happy horse for a while now.
Add Triple Crown Alfa Lox to their diet. Love the stuff, and the horses think it is candy.
