For thos of us blessed with your heinz 57’s
i have an italian greyhound/jack russell who is such a cool dog. i originally was just going to adopt him and then find him a home because he was in a high kill shelter and so submissive he wanted nothing to do with anyone who came in and i was afraid he would never get adopted. needless to say 1.5 years later he found a home with me and my other pound puppy.
he is the neetest little dog. he has a lot of the italian greyhound charateristics and the body type but the markings of an intalian greyhound. hes perfect because he loves going outside and runs and plays but inside he just wants to be curled up wherever i am and is just so sweet and affectionate.
what kind of mutt combinations does everyone else have?
I have a rhodesian ridgeback/boxer (pound puppy), that has been a challenge to live with (she belongs to my in-laws that moved in with us).
My favorite is our aussie/golden retriever cross. Actually we have sisters from that litter that look nothing alike. I have attached a photo, Jenna is on the left, Cubby is in the center rear, and our purebred brittany Murphy is on the right.

Cubby has the true herding instinct, Jenna, not at all. I sometimes suspect that the mother dog had more than one date, and that Jenna’s dad was really a Carolina dog and not a golden retriever, as she really has all the physical and behavioral characteristics of the carolina dogs.
my most favorite mutt dog was our golden retriever/german shepard who was pitch black and most people thought he was a black lab (actually I have no idea if any of you remember the coors light commericals where they are big people in the mountains and theres a dog catching a frisbee in the mountain range–that was our pup’s brother). He was the smartest, most intuitive pooch we ever had. We had to put him down 2 yrs ago at the ripe age of 15 (and he was a 120lb dog), and I still miss him terribly. if I can ever find that combo when I’m ready to get a dog, I will take one hands down. Best combo Ever.
Collie x German Shep…wonderful dogs, great around horses and very sensible.
Siberian Husky/German Shepherd. All the ones I’ve known have missed the obnoxious things about the Siberian breed and gained the loyalty and willingness to please of the Shepherd.
Oh, the joys of looking at your dog and thinking “Hmmmm.” Current dog is a collie (Border or Beardie, I lean toward Beardie because she has a sense of humor), possibly just a cross of those two. Other suggestions have been GSD and terrier - I had a terrier and nope, I don’t buy that. My last dog was (best guess) a terrier/husky mix who was one of those best of both worlds blends. The husky side gave her more mellow than a terrier; the terrier side gave her the ability to NOT wander and made her somewhat available for obedience. She was the best behaved dog I’ve ever owned, quiet in the house, good on the leash and, surprisingly, reliable with children and small animals. Not a blend you’d have picked for that.
A neighbor had a Heinz when I was a kid. Dog was a brindled beagle/terrier mix (best guess) and very calm, as nearly perfect offleash as I’ve ever seen (only once did I ever see her startle and run across a street), and absolutely tolerant of children.
From very general observations, I’ve seen pleasant beagle mixes, collie/sheltie mixes, and some retriever mixes. Maybe it’s the state of Cockers and GSDs and pit bulls, but those are the mixes I’ve seen which have been most likely to be trouble. Also, unfortunately, a lot of lab mixes are thoroughly unpleasant.
A friend has a pitbull x greyhound and she’s just lovely. Lovely coat, lovely manners, lovely in between head shape. I’d take one of those in a hot minute!
Well I have a Dutch shepherd. They are a breed yes but when the Dutch created the breed they use what ever did the job. They didn’t care about looks, just that it was healthy and could do the job (herding but now police/military dog mostly). She is smart and has drive out the wazoo. Did have an issue with wanting to play with horses but now she respects them. I just got a kitten and she is very nice to it, though I think that is her and not necessarily a breed trait.
I have a beagle / jack russel mix who is just the most loyal, sweet and loving dog I have ever met. She is always happy, loves new adventures and helps keep me in shape as she loves to walk. She was actually found on a horse farm and given to me because the girl who foun her couldn’t keep her. 5 years later, she is my best friend and my very best cheerer upper! I have always loved jacks and beagles and really wound up with the best of both worlds!

how funny. i have a friend who has the same mix as well and ive never come across another. she has the brindle markings of both a greyhound and pitt and is a lovely dog. she is a lovely dog and is the most well behaved composed dog no matter who or what she is around. he can be biking and she runs right along him. when he stops she stops never runs off etc. a great mix. i would have one in a second!
I have had several shepherd mixes; all have been really good dogs, but the best of all was a shepherd/coonhound mix. He was THE HAPPIEST, friendliest dog on the planet, made me laugh every single day of the almost 14 years I had him. He had the hound voice sometimes, but not the running hunting instinct. He was just a big goofy guy but as I lived in a city type neighborhood, he would intimidate people - they equated big, black and tan w/ dobermans! Its been 5 years and I still miss him…
My grandma has a boxer/border collie, she’s the best!! So sweet, very athletic, LOVES to run like a maniac and awesome markings. Very little herding instinct.

I have a lab/chow/greyhound cross that is one of the best dogs I’ve ever had. He looks like a lab/greyhound cross until you open his mouth and his tongue is solid black.
He is the single most intelligent dog I’ve ever met. He is 12 now, and has lymphosarcoma. He might be the only dog I’d ever consider cloning, you know, if i had a few extra hundred thousand dollars to spend.
My Molly was a lab/pitbull cross, and a lady until the day we put her down at 13. She LOVED kids, was a certified therapy dog, and just a great dog. I miss her bunches.
Shady was dachshund and terrier of some kind with maybe some beagle. She was a good dog, if a little high maintenece. She had a bit of separation issues. She was all attitude with other dogs, bossed the cats around, and didn’t like small children at all.
My youngest dog is cattle dog and something (shepherd? setter? border collie? maybe a bit of all of those?). She’s smart, has herding instinct, DRIVE, More Drive, and a horrid counter surfing problem. She’s a lot of fun though.
I like the crosses. You never know what you are getting, and it’s fun to watch them and see what breed traits pop out and wave at you.
Wow. I have to decide?
Of our ten dogs, only 1 is a purebred: George the Basset
Of the nine:
Cooper-Red Australian Cattle Dog mix
Statia-poodle X
Maxie-supposed to be PekeAPoo-mostly Peke, I think
Abbie-another PekeAPoo
Oscar-Terrier X-has lots of “boing” so maybe some JRT in him?
Annie-yorkie poo mix?
Noodles-She might be a purebred-Piebald Dachshund
Buddy-long haired dachshund X
Pepper-our latest-puggle, I’m guessing
If I had to decide on a mutt mix-I would say a (reasonable) poodle X. The ones we have are wonderful dogs, sweet, friendly, and obedient-most of the time . And we aren’t poodle people. I’d love to have a standard poodle…LOL
Pound dogs: Oscar, Annie, Noodles
Side of the road dogs: Cooper, Statia, Buddy, Pepper
Yes, I have to count to see if everyone is in the house. Yes, I have to go through three or four names before I get to the right one.
I loved my Australian Shepherd/German Shepherd mix. Once in a lifetime dog.
He looked mostly like a smallish(75lb) GSD except for his little bit of white on his toes and chest. He also had a somewhat finer build and a longer, thiner face w/ exceptionally huge ears that differentiated him from a purebred GSD.
And his entire lack of tail. He was born into a litter of what was supposed to be purebred Australian Shepherds, so they bobbed his tail. The family who purchased him was not well equipped to handle a puppy, and after they created some major issues w/ him and realised he wasn’t even an Aussie, they gave him to a shelter at 7mnths old. A few months later, that’s where picked him up.
I had him for about a year and a half before he died. I miss him every day. Best dog I’ve ever had.
Not to slight my current puppy. They’re different. not comparable.

Supa-what a wonderful dog! So gorgeous! So sweet-look at those eyes. I’m sure you do miss him.
My Misty- chiweenie is what the breeder called her. Mom was chihuahua Dad was Dachshund
My daughter has 2 young dogs that help with the cows, they are half fiest and half beagle, and all bad.
My border collie/lab mix Great personality, smart, (sometimes too much for her own good), and adorable!
wire haired griffon x plott hound… best horse show dog ever, but that hound smell :9
Poodle/Schnauzer mix, but they can be hit or miss We have two in the house- one is just an absolute angel and the other is a bit of work, if you will! But absolutely the cutest dogs ever IMO
Our golden/shepherd mix (definitely golden retriever, but with the body type of a shepherd and with a longer face) is very very smart and high-drive and loves to please. A good combination!
