Youth dressage saddles

I’m looking for suggestions of moderately inexpensive dressage saddles (I’ll likely wind up with a used saddle if I can find what I need). My trainer suggested I look into a Passier youth dressage saddle for my 13.1 hh Welsh pony that probably needs a medium/wide or wide tree. I am 4’11" so don’t have a very long leg so could quite possibly ride in a youth saddle. I currently have a 17" County Competitor No. 3 fit (medium-wide I believe but it’s an older saddle and I’m told the older Countys tend to be narrower). I’m thinking a 16.5" seat would be perfect–not sure I need the 17"

Anyone have input on the flap length on the Wintec dressage saddles for a shorter rider?

Looking for suggestions on what saddles might work for us as well as places to possibly find such used saddles. Thanks for the help.

Stubben has a youth dressage saddle- it only comes in a 17" though. To me the Stubbens run large; my TB takes a 26cm Stubben and his Prestige is a 31cm.

I tried youth saddles when I was saddle hunting and while I am also ‘short’ the issue ended up being the length from hip to knee being too long for the flap. Best to sit in a few to see.
I ended up with a Stubben Parzival [16"] used and customized with short flaps and an HDR cc [also 16"].

I love that Stubben youth Dressage saddle but I think the 17" would be way too big.

two lovely youth saddles just sold on ebay for a pittance, a courbette bernina and a prestige lucky. I’ve had both a bernina and a top and I really liked both saddles.

My daughter has a 2009 Wintec Pony saddle. She really likes it. Stubben does make a 16" Jr. saddle. It is the Stubben Laurus. I would google it to see where you can find one.

Found one!

My daughter rides her horse (a slightly built 15H horse) in a 16" close contact but since I need to school the horse for her I use my 17H Passier GT. MY butt will not fit in a 16"! She didn’t feel like switching tack one day and just used mine…she is about 5’ tall now. Unfortunately she likes my saddle better now!! The older Passiers run smaller in the seat. They no longer make the GT but can often be found on Ebay for 1K or under.

Thanks all!

Thanks for giving me some leads. I’d love to be able to purchase a saddle on ebay but without fitting it to my pony and sitting in it first I’m a bit hesitant. I’ll keep looking–the right saddle for us is out there.

I have never sat in it, but the Thornhill Vienna II comes in 16" and a large variety of widths, with a very economical price tag for being new and leather… Might be something to look at.

I have a 4 yr old welsh cob mare and I am riding in a custom Albion Pony saddle- 16 inch seat, wide tree with a 15" flap. I tried a Duette Largo- fit the pony well and the price is right but the seat is a little hard.

![](y 13 hand welsh section C is ridden in a Wintec Isabel. Sorry I have no idea of the flap length but he looks and moves fine in it. The saddle is a 17 1/2 inch seat, using the wide gullet. I am 5’2" for a point of reference and have a long inseam for my height. I cannot comfortably ride in a smaller seat with the exeption of stubbens because my knees shoot over the front of the saddle.

Here is a picture of him in his wintec.

The Duett all purpose Rondo comes in a 16 and can be special ordered in a 15. The all prrpose is dreessage tendency. You can always ask about getting a different model in a smaller seat too.

I grew up in a Crosby Prix St Georges 17"…loved that saddle. It began as my mother’s and I’d snitch it every time she wasn’t in the barn…I was miserable in my own dressage saddle at the time (a County WB)

Crosby’s are well made and inexpensive to buy ($700).

Hi there. I have a 16" Verhan Odyessy with a med wide tree. I’m quite thin so the seat is fine for me, but I’m fairly tall so the skirt is too short. You’re welcome to try it.

Ponies and peanuts

You can ride in my Bernina Jr if you want…lol

I think my tush might be a tad over sized for that saddle  That would be a sight–me trying to fit in that one–it’s truly a dressage saddle for little ones
