Such a great memory.
Thank you.
She always made my heart smile.
Love this!! Thank you!
Saw this recently . . .

Looks like she’s still herself!
Still Z one and only!
I actually think that the BC Classic she lost to Blame the next year showed her heart and talent even more…
But I still love Trevor’s call - THIS… IS… UN-BE-LIEV-A-BLE!!!
One of my faves. I’m still convinced that if Mike Smith had just let her out a little sooner, she would have held Blame off. That’s my hill and I’m happily dying on it
He feels the same as you do.
I know, I felt totally gutted for him. In the same breath, I stand by that he rode her so excellently and should not regret any of his choices. A big fan of his, too.
I wanted to re-live the happy time. She was such a unique runner.
I remember how wonderful it was to feel the excitement of that race, and to see how many people were as absolutely thrilled to bits as I was.
If only he had figured that out during the race… she was too far back and my screaming at the TV did not help. I still think that Mike did not immediately realize that there was a second pack ahead of the one he was initially behind… and YES, she would have caught Blame if she had a better ride. Still a great race.

I forget which race it was (not Breeders Cup)… but I was at Emerald Downs as a friend had a horse running that particular day. As post time for Z’s race arrived (wherever it was), all eyes turned to the monitors everywhere. The track announcer even said it was a couple of minutes to post for her race (I have NEVER heard that before or since) - and I swear that everything STOPPED. Horses were in the paddock for the next race at Emerald Downs and they put the live feed for Zenyatta’s race up on the screen in the infield. I was standing watching in the grandstand in the middle of a grizzled crowd of railbirds and bettors… and every eye was on the monitors. It was another breathtaking come from behind run to win - and we were all screaming. I turned to head back to the paddock and the old guy behind me was teary… and smiled at me and said - “now THAT’S a horse”…
Thanks. That is a great story.
I love that, smoofox. What a memory! It was a fantastic race. <3
Her Classic with Blame was the only major, big race I’ve ever physically been present for (the closest I’ve ever lived to a track was like 5 hours, heh). The atmosphere was absolutely unbelievable, everyone was incredibly excited. After they crossed the finish line you could have heard a pin drop, imo. It’s like everyone was shocked at what just happened. The mood changed instantly. Some people boo’ed, everyone was clearly pretty upset at Z’s loss. I also agree that, in hindsight, Smith should have let her out sooner. I don’t blame him though, that’s racing. My ex-husband did total our car on the drive back home, so it ended up being a doubly memorable race, heh.
