Zippers on Sergio Grassos

Hi! I bought a pair of Sergio’s back in 2003. The zipper finally broke on them this year. I bought daughter a pair a few months ago…zipper has already broke!! The shoe repair guy told me the boots are beautifully made where the leather is concerned but the zipper is a $1.50 model and doomed. Now, I will say tall boot sock got caught in zipper badly prior to it breaking but again, shoe repair guy pointed out that the zipper breaking was inevitable.

Has anyone taking this issue up with Sergio Grasso? Anyone just replace the cheap zippers with the tough ones to prevent inevitable from happening (because you know it is going to happen 15 minutes before they have to walk in the ring!) From a sock perspective, are there socks that won’t do so much damage if they do get stuck? Those Zocks are so fragile, the zipper just inhaled them!

Thoughts, advice, experiences?

Thanks!

I got a pair of Sergio Grasso’s last year. Beautiful boot, punched toe design, fit perfect. Both zippers went within six months of me getting them. I wish I had had both replaced at the same time because about a month after the first one broke so did the second.

I contacted Sergio Grasso- all they could do was recommend a place to take them to to get fixed. I ended up just having them repaired locally as the place they recommended was in a different state. I haven’t had any issues since.

As far as socks go- I wear mine under my breeches so I don’t have any useful tips.

I just had the same issue with my Vogels! Zipper broke on one and they are 7 years old so I had both replaced… the boot repair guy said he was surprised the zippers lasted as long as they had. Crazy to think what we’re spending on these high-end boots and the only thing holding them together are cheap zippers!

As far as socks go, I actually prefer a cotton sock like the Tredstep Ultra-Cool. They are thicker than Zocks but I don’t have an issue with zippers eating them.

I have Sergio’s and have had them 3 years with no zipper issues (probably just jinxed myself), I used Ariat socks.

Did they repair with a bigger zipper? More industrial looking? It really is shocking the cost of the boot and the zipper is pathetic. My shoe repair man got quite passionate about how silly it was to use a dirt cheap zipper with such nice leather.

I think I will let Sergio know my thoughts on this.

Hm, I think the zipper is about the same size. I know it’s a YKK zipper and seems to be tougher (as it didn’t split when I was struggling to zip them up over all my winter layers). My shoe repair guy said the same thing about cheap zippers being put on boots and splitting all the time. He actually repaired the original zippers but they split again about a week later.
