Zoetis vs Vetera vaccines?

So my vet I had out to give shots misunderstood me.

I wanted VETERA brand shots,

also wanted my horse’s shots split up over 2-3 visits ( 1 per visit or 2 given at first visit then the other 2 weeks later)

The vet seemed in a rush which makes me get nervous so my fault that I did not clarify and re clarify!

she asked me if I wanted VETERA gold and I said “no, I dont want the six way” and proceeded to tell her I want it split the following way

WNV single vaccine (NOT given in combination with EEE/WEE/T )

Rabies as a single shot not in combo ( Yes I know Vetera does not manufacture a rabies vacc)

Vetera EEE/WEE/T

the problem was I did not say VETERA in front of the ones that I mentioned here , assuming she knew I wanted Vetera vaccines as I told the receptionist.

well he received the ZOETIS west nile innovator +EWT

.

I like the ultra purification of Vetera’s vaccines and how they do not use animal and plant proteins to help thwart reactions, which Is why I asked for Vetera originally when I called.

I just want to know others opinions on the above protocol of Vetera vaccines from knowledgeable people/horse owners /vets.

it makes me sad that I did all this research for what seems like nothing lol

Zoetis = Fort Dodge. A whole lot of horses have problems with those vaccines. They have not, as far as I’ve been able to tell, changed from when they were branded Fort Dodge.

Vetera has additional filtering that is supposed to help prevent vaccine reactions. They’ve worked very well on my vaccine reactive horse.

I’d not consider Zoetis a reasonable substitute for Vetera on a vaccine reactive horse, unless the horse in question has shown tolerance to Fort Dodge in the past.

Thank you, Simkie. Yes he has shown sensitivity in the past to Fort Dodge, although I believe it was the Flu/Rhino. Once I realized that she might have misunderstood me she was already out at her truck pulling up vials… I wish I would have still ran out and told her, not sure once a vet pulls the contents of a vial into a syringe that they could use it on another horse or not. :frowning:

I think Zoetis is doing a special promotion with vets this years as my vet was pushing the 5way/Rabies combo even
though my horses’ records are ‘supposed’ to be marked with No Ft. Dodge/No Zoetis. She actually emailed me suggesting
this before I even called for appts.

So maybe it was not a misunderstanding but your vet was in on the promotional bandwagon.

I use the Vetera Gold but I ordered and gave them myself. I think standard is Zoetis unless you specify differently. It is substantially more expensive and I doubt they keep it in stock. If you want something specific, make sure they know a month in advance and confirm week before.

i don’t split vaccines unless the horse has a history of reacting. Recall every shot is a chance for clostridrial myelitis (??) that is not just a Banamine thing. My goal is to keep sticks to a minimum unless there is a history of problems.

i have a filly who is super sensitive to lots of things but she does fine with Vetera Gold.

Prestige is a 3rd option I used before.

We don’t stock Zoetis; just Vetera for EWT/WNV. But…just because you told the receptionist doesn’t mean the vet will get the memo. Always re-iterate it to the vet. Like the above poster, I’m not sure why you wanted to split vaccines unless the horse has had a reaction to one of those vaccines in the past.

He has reacted previously.

I want to clarify that I am not blaming the vet nor did I ever say that I was, however the only reason I assumed was she did ask me if I wanted the VETERA gold and when I said no I want the EWT, rabies and west nile separate ( given 2 weeks apart but honestly didnt care if the rabies +EWT was given on the same day just wanted west nile given in a separate shot )

the reason for the separate shot is because is seems west nile delivers a higher antibody level when given by itself rather than a combo vaccine) I created a separate post to ask this question.

He has gotten reactions before I always thought it was to the flu/ rhino IM , but he still had a reaction to this vaccine with only the E/W/T/WNV by Zoetis

I wanted to try a different brand and split shots to try and see if it was another one he reacted to.

Next time, email and/or text the vet as well as the office. Double check that they have what you want the day before the appointment. I like Vetera vaccines because my sensitive guy can tolerate them. The others get Vetera Gold one day and rabies vaccine a week later. He gets everything divided up as much as possible, while still using Vetera. We do use the Imrab rabies, but that doesn’t bother him.
