Zombie attack

Trying to decide what horse to use when the Zombies attack.

Do I ride my new guy who is too dumb to be afraid of anything?, or the OTTB who is a little spookidy?.

Pros of the gelding- not gonna fall off, very comfy, kinda dumb

Cons of the gelding- might try to beg for treats from said zombies.

Pros of OTTB- fast AF, aware of her surroundings at ALL times, did I mention fast AF?

Cons- might dump my ass because “that leaf looked funny”

I am kinda leaning towards the OTTB and using New guy as a pack mule??

Best. Post. Ever.

This is a very thoughtful post. Actually, both my horses sound just like yours.

In the end I would likely ride my fast but flighty OTTB…after a few miles of galloping he would level out and be a little less panicky–while towing my lazy older Paint behind (or attempting to) with a longeline (maybe two lines tied together so it’s really long?) and all of our necessities strapped to his back (the scary stuff I could never put on the TB: tarps, noisy bags of food, etc). If they could keep pace with each other, it could definitely work out.

Oh, and western saddle goes on the TB. Extra rider security and more places to tie hand-held weapons

No. The OTTB would sacrifice you to the zombies to save himself. They work that way. Well, at least mine does. Take the slower but more altrusitic horse that will not toss you overboard to the zombies to save his own skin.

Take the OTTB and get some stick-em for your butt.

The other one sort of sounds like zombie bait. Now, if you need to be in the kill-the-zombies army, then the gelding might be a good jousting mount. Properly armed of course.

About 10 years ago, maybe more, I had the Wrong Horse. And the way I figured it out was that I had a dream that I was being shot at and I had to jump on my horse to gallop to safety, but then I saw my first horse (who in real life, I’d sold several years before) standing beside him and was so relieved. I chose him instead and when I woke up, I knew I needed to find a new home for my horse.

Since all 4 of mine are lame and old, I’m opting for loading them in the trailer and driving off. Just hoping they will load, fast.

Go for the gelding and get one that someone has done competitive shooting on, or one that has been a pony horse at the track, used to big noisy crowds.

I’d want my nasty, mean Trakhener back! She’d lure the zombies in looking sweet and approachable and then BAM she’d kick, bite, stomp the $h!& out of those guys. I’d just stand off to the side and watch

I think your answer depends on what type of zombies we’re talking about here! If they’re like the ones from most of the movies that have come out recently, then they’re slow walking and rather dumb, in which case, I believe your dummy would be the best bet, and reliable to boot.

Now, if we’re talking more like World War Z zombies that can run and move like normal humans, I’d absolutely opt for the OTTB and use the dummy as the pack horse. Speed when you need it is important, and maybe the flighty OTTB could pick up on a potential threat before you and get your butts out of Dodge.

What you need here is a Foundation/TB cross Appy… Fast enough for a getaway, tough enough to kick off a zombie’s head.

No Matter how fast the OTTB is… When you’re dumped, the zombies have you. Steady helps the aim too…

Epic question. I think the OTTB, as now I seem to mostly see fast zombies, and you need to get away. Plus, you might have a problem with the dumb one being like my guy: totally brave and wouldn’t be afraid, so he’d take a nibble of the zombie when asking for a treat, then I’d have a Zombie horse!

Do these zombies only eat human brains or horsey brains too? If they are after human, I’d ride the gelding and pack mule the OTTB. She will spook at the zombies and hopefully step on and/or kick them providing a safe get away. She’s your shield! Now, if those zombies are after the horses too, then you ride the mare. Hang on tight and give her a big kick, she’ll have enough adrenaline for both your horses and be able to run like hell!

I think the poster above was on to something about Trakhners. My old Trak/TBx would be the horse to have in case of a zombie attack. He would also have attacked the zombies, put them in their place, and taken care of me all at the same time. He would never have dreamed of abandoning me to save himself.

A teenage girl who sometimes rides my horse explained it all to me a few weeks ago. Apparently we don’t need to worry about zombies because they are so slow and stupid, that the wild animals will eat them all fairly quickly. She had a fairly elaborate explanation for why, complete with reference sources, but I’m afraid I didn’t quite retain it all.

Zombies on The Walking Dead ate a couple of horses in their episodes.

Oh dear. Then I’m going for a fast horse. I’m afraid mine would go beg for treats from zombies
