Zycosan replaces pentosan

I personally have never had a problem with reactions to compounded pentosan, but I know that plenty of people have. When discussing Zycosan with my vet, she said that overall she was not seeing the reactions that many had with compounded pentosan.

That is super helpful thank you!

I just completed the 4-week protocol with Zycosan. It worked! My horse is no longer off under saddle. Even though itā€™s subjective, I just sense that he feels better. I donā€™t think Iā€™m going to need to get him injected now which is a relief. I have also read that it takes 3-6 months for the full effect of the drug to take effect so thereā€™s a chance he will get even better.

He had no ill effects from the injection.

Very, very happy. My vet says she has had excellent results with it.

I have also experienced major improvements in my horses on Pentosan (Zycosan). I have two older horses, 21 and 22, and they work 4 to 6 days per week each. They want to work, they are happy and relaxed in their work, and they are both working and moving in the pasture sound and level. One of them has navicular syndrome, diagnosed via MRI, in both front feet, the other has never been off, and her hock x-rays are still clean, but sheā€™s been really well ridden and trained and kept for almost all of her life. The other guyā€™s had a chequered life until he got to us. I just had another horse come in, with very clear ringbone, so heā€™ll start Pentosan on Friday, and then continue on it monthly after the loading dose, along with his Prevequine. Heā€™s also happy to work, and Iā€™d like to keep them all comfortable and happy going forward.

I gulped and shelled out for the 4 dose pack of Zycosan for Feronia, who is getting a little creaky in her old age. $481 by the time I paid for syringes and needles, taxes, shipping etc. But she is just happier when sheā€™s on it. Am doing the once a week protocol and weā€™ll see how she does after that. Old lady horses deserve the best!

If anyone else is buying right now, thereā€™s currently a zycosan rebate!

Has anyone who previously used compounded pentosan and has now used Zycosan able to testify to a difference between the two?

If it helps for next time, you can purchase needles and syringes off Amazon or at TSC for pretty cheap.

Reviving this thread as am considering trying Zycosan for my gelding after trying Adequan last fall, which didnā€™t seem to have any kind of an effect on him. Any updates on efficacy of the Zycosan? Specifically for arthritis?

Iā€™m not sure what youā€™re looking for. Itā€™s the same med as pentosan, just 4 times the price.

In any case, my mare, who never responded well to Adequan, responded positively to Zycosan, the same as she had responded to pentosan in the past.

I just did the first Zycosan injection for my gelding yesterday - heā€™s 26, and struggling to lay down. I did Adequan last year, and it made a great difference, but the effect faded long before he was due for the annual re-loading. Iā€™m testing to see if Zycosan will last longer, otherwise Iā€™ll opt to choose one to do twice a year.

Zycosan is definitely a bit more convenient, requiring less loading doses, and my vet sung praises for it.

After much searching, I discovered a US compounding pharmacy that continues to sell pentosan. It has a ā€œdashā€ of glucosamine in it, which is why it continues to be available.

Your veterinarian has to set up an account with them. My vet bought it for me, and I havenā€™t had to buy it again since I got my first bottle, so I donā€™t know if she has to buy it or can supply a prescription and I can order it.

My bottle says the following:
PENTOSAN AND GLUCOSAMINE
250 mg/100 mg/ml injection ā€”> this info is different from what was on my bottles from Wedgewood, and while Iā€™m no pharmacist, I assume that means 250 mg of pentosan and 100 mg glucosamine per ml
The bottle has 50 ml in it.
The cost was $135 for the 50 ml bottle.

The bottle says ā€œdiscard 28 days after first useā€, and my vet called about this and was told it was a dispensing language requirement, to refrigerate the bottle, and that it would last as long as pentosan ever lasts.

Hope this helps!

(PS ā€“ I was obtaining Pentosan from an Australian veterinary pharmacy for less cost than Zycosan in the US until I found this place, but it was still about $300 for a 50 ml vial through AU.)

Would you be willing to share the name of the Australian pharmacy here or via PM?

This is the one I bought, but with shipping, the price increased a bit: https://discountpetmeds.com.au/pentosan-equine-injection-50ml-pentosan-polysulfate-sodium/

I have not had issues w skin reactions to zycosan. I give 4 weekly doses 3x/yr, per vet. Also monthly
legend. Both seem to be working well. Its currently 20% off at chewy .

My boyfriend has ordered from this company (he is a nerdy research-loving weight lifter and uses it on himself :grimacing:)

The discount from chewy is only if youā€™re a new customer. I just ordered from Heartland Vet Supply during the Memorial Day sale and got 18% off. They also have an auto ship that gives you a discount. If I like it, I plan to sign up for that.

I havenā€™t started it yet. I didnā€™t notice that itā€™s such a big dose so had to order 10 ml syringes.

The instructions on my vet label say to do the loading dose and then once monthly. I think Iā€™ll just repeat the loading dose in 4 months. Giving this 3 times a year doesnā€™t offend my wallet. Of course, this is if I think itā€™s doing something.

This is a one time discount just so you are aware. Zycosan must be price controlled as it seems to be the same price anywhere, which is fine.

Interestingā€¦they donā€™t seem to require a prescription for purchase.

Has anyone used Pentosan/Zycosan in conjunction with Equioxx?
