Zymox- Ear Issues

My Coton de Tulear didn’t come from the best situation and we got him with some ear issues we are trying to clear up. The last time we went to the groomers she really cleaned up the hair around the ear canals and was able to get most of the area clean. She recommended Zymox.

I went ahead and bought a bottle but realized I bought the cleanser. Now looking at Amazon there are a few different kinds. Should I buy the Ear Treatment too and do that first following with the cleanser twice a week?

Has anyone used this and had success? The cleanser is helping and lets me get all the gunk out of his ears, but I don’t think that is going to clear the existing issues. What are your routines with keeping your dogs ears clean?

I groom and I recommend zymox to my clients too! Definitely get the ear treatment. Put the ear treatment in the ears without cleaning the ears first. Don’t wipe it out or use the cleanser afterwards. If you clean the ears while using the ear treatment it will not work. I keep dog’s ears clean by either clipping hair off around the ear canal or plucking some of the ear hair out. Taking care of any allergies will also help keep the ears clear of gunk.

While groomers (and internet peeps) can be good resources for information, if you’re not already working with your veterinarian on this, I’d hold off on putting anything in there til your vet can see it. Else, it can be difficult to get a good sample and identify which medications and other products are necessary.

If the issue is related to yeast or bacteria, it can indeed be helpful to use an ear cleaning/drying solution preventatively if it’s established that the infection is not secondary to say…allergies. But some of those products can be pretty irritating to an already raw ear with an active infection.

I have a different breed, but have found that trimming the hair so air can circulate and dry the ear is a must.

I have given plain Benedryl to help dry up the ears if they are very wet.

I use chlorhexadine solution to clean the ears.

I’m trying the Zymox too, it hasn’t arrived yet.

I’ve lost faith in my vet’s ear treatments :no:
